This is a brilliant movie. The acting was also brilliant. The beginning was a bit confusing, but the rest of the movie was amazing. Well worth watching.

This was absolutely amazing! Within the first 10 minutes the characters pulled me in, and kept my eyes glued to the screen. The acting was amazing, and the character development was amazing as well. Great plot. The only thing I didn't understand was the beginning scene, i'm just not sure what it had to do with the rest of the movie. I give this 5/5.

Dark, strange, subtle, expertly executed and excellently performed.

Really enjoyed this...a fable of a crumbling life. Coen Bros are so good at this. 9/10

Erm... I enjoy the darkness which envelops this film and it is well written but honestly not my favorite, it does however touch on some interesting topics 7/10

My own personal melancholy aside, this one is hard to finish for the uninitiated. Your ever growing impulse for the main character to react or lash out as the movie progresses will not be appeased in this one. It is a frustrating build of pent up emotions and unsaid reactions that will drive you crazy if you don't understand it. It is a melancholy idyll full of things unsaid. A frustratingly impotent but also somewhat enlightening movie.

Had to watch this for school (Old Testament & Modern Art) and it was slightly painful at part, and yet rewarding in the end.

Very strong Jewish sense of humor...but of course it's a Coen's movie and a very good one at that...4/5.

Not the best Coen Bros. film, but still a Coen Bros. film nonetheless...

'I didnt do anything' in this context - that the characters are liable or have the unforutante luck of being involved in a tedious circumstance. These is just one of the many themes shown in the film e.g recurring theme of did it happen or didnt happen A Serious Man has the perfect blend of humour, drama and strangeness at its best. When Lawrence had to pay for his wife's lover funeral that made me chuckle even more when he said is right to complain. I am going to need to watch the film to fully understand and appreciate it. 4/5

Ostensibly character driven and slow by 'most' standards, there are SO many really cool things going on in the both the depths and shallows of this movie that deconstruct the overt constructs. The Coen's did a good job. On the whole this is not a flick for anyone that isn't into movies designed to make you think, but if that's your cup of tea, and you have some familiarity with the Book of Job as background (at least, that's a plus), then you'll appreciate it. To be honest, how I could say this, given that "O'Brother" was humorous, I don't know, but I think I liked this one more. Really glad I took the time: 8 or 8.5/10.

I liked this movie. Its not about watching it and waiting for something to happen. But paying attention to the build up, and the irony of it all. Not a film for everyone but surely a film for some.

For me it's one of their best. An autobiographical masterpiece. it takes guts to make a movie only people educated in judaism can fully understand (meaning even jews who were raised completely secular are somewhat excluded in this picture). it is sad that the only language universal is a christian one even if the film maker happens to be jewish. the movie opens with quote from rashi who was a biblical commentator and I guess that says it all. If the coens were musicians this should have been released on the TZADIK label for a limited press.

HUMMMM. What can I say about this film???? First. I have no idea how I managed to sit through the first half. Very slow, and a bit hard to follow what it is all about. Second. The second half of the movie was witty, clever, funny, sad, and it made me happy, I did not stop it half way through. Third. If you like hollywood movies, this is not for you:)

The Coen Brothers return to their comedy roots with an original, darkly humorous story about an ordinary man's quest to become a serious man. Physics professor Larry Gopnik can't believe his life: his wife is leaving him, his unemployed brother won't move off the couch, someone is threatening his career, his kids are a mystery and his neighbor is tormenting him by sunbathing nude. Struggling to make sense of it all, Larry consults three different rabbis and their answers lead him on a twisted journey of faith, family, delinquent behavior and mortality.
