I don't get why people call this film depressing; it's an accurate representation of what life was life for Japanese people during the war. It's not even that graphic. Personally, I think that Isao Takahata even tamed the images. Despite all that it didn't have the kind of impact on me that it had with others. It's a great film yes but not particularly touching because it was predictable. The soundtrack was nice though. 7/10

The Japanese really know how to break the viewer's heart, don't they. Another Japanese film that did that to me was Hachi-ko: http://www.primewire.ag/item.php?id=22202&page=4 USA Version with Richard Gere http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tviehabZz4M Part 1 of 8 Japanese Original version with English sub-titles I was crying for days after watching both versions of Hachi-ko, but THIS film is wonderful too. Definitely a must watch. 5/5

(O_o) It's very sad how war affects the weakest ones in society the hardest...mainly children and old folks who can't work and fend for themselves~: (

This is a wonderful movie. It touched me right from the beginning. Great animation, music and story line. If you're a big cry baby like me you will most likely end up crying when you watch this movie. Don't let this discourage you this is an excellent watch. 10/10 P.S. I hated the aunt!

No movie has affected me so much as this one has. It exemplifies the horror that the civilians in Japan had to go through. Given the background that this is based on a true story of the writer who went through the same trauma and wrote this one as an apologetic tribute gives food for thought. I called up my little sister in the night after watching this one.. Lol!! One of the best from the stable of Studio Ghibli. Its a sin for anime fans to give this a miss! 10/10.

This was a pretty phenomenal movie. It does a great job of showing some of the postwar experience in Japan. Many people forget that anime does take the real and somber route from time to time. This is a wonderful example of how anime can be much more than the display of fantasy that the mainstream population thinks it is.
