A great interpretation of the Howard Frank Mosher novel. It has a clever script that will stir you with it's magic and beauty. The scenery is gorgeous, with beautiful views of north-central Vermont providing the setting for this mid-century tale. We have bootleggers, drunken monks, drunken bootlegging monks, car and boat and train chases, a spectral witch who disappears and reappears in the damnedest times and places to offer wisdom, and an undead whiskey-running pirate straight out of New England folklore with a gang of henchmen. Excellent cast and acting as well by Kris Kristofferson, William Sanderson, Gary Farmer and Charlie McDermott. Writer/Director Jay Craven, working on a small budget, did a brilliant job. Worth a watch... 8/10
