A powerfully humanistic portrayal of the perils of war, it's potent and thought-provoking. Despite its scenes of battle, death, suicide and suffering, it's shockingly intimate. Clint Eastwood's direction is brilliant, he has made a film that is thoughtful, poignant, touching, and philosophical. Much as already been made about the pride and honor of the Japanese, but as a people they have rarely, if ever, been depicted as fully human characters in American war movies. It's amazing to think what Clint Eastwood has done here. Worth a watch... 9/10

I really enjoyed this movie (even tho its all hard subbed) Clint Eastwood really made me rethink imperial Japan...well the soldiers anyway i still think that the command was an evil force that should have been stomped out of existence BUT the men that were there were only following orders just like our men that stormed the beaches. My grandfather helped to take Iwo and he said it was the worst part of his tour of duty so many people died and for what? not a damn thing, but this movie makes you realize that no matter what all people regardless of race color creed or nationality are always fighting for their families and country during war and that every one is human in their hearts. 10/10 and absolutely nothing less

Another good one by Clint...very emotional/moving...it takes a look at WWII from a different perspective, nice to see it from the other side for a change. 4/5

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I can't believe I waited so long to watch this. It shows how no matter what side they were on, most soldiers were just normal men fighting for their country doing what they thought was right. Many of us growing up looked at the Germans and Japanese in WWII as pure evil. A lot of these men were really just boys thrown into the war, wishing more than anything to get back to their families.

This movie really hit home for me(I'm part Japanese and part Native American). A lot of people had this mindset that the Japanese were bad but that wasn't the case. In the end we are all humans trying to survive. I loved this movie because it showed the other side of war movies. It goes to show that war is never bad versus good but rather two groups of people trying to protect what they cherish the most. 5/5

If you watch Flags of Our Fathers then you got to watch this one as well. Pretty horrific if you were involved in this situation. War is Hell and will always be.......

The rarest breed of film in my estimate, a war movie which makes you feel empathy... Just a fantastic piece of film making. Up there with Glory for me as all time fave war movies go.

There is nothing that war has ever achieved that we could not better achieve without it. Its sad so many lives were lost . Mr Eastwood did a great job 9/10

I liked the movie but dreaded watching it. My Dad was at Iwo Jima and survived (thank god)..He was a 17yr old sniper and never spoke of it. He lost a finger an had numerous schrapnel wounds. When he died several years ago, he wrote in his will to let him be buried with the schrapel still in his back and hand... I just wish he was more open about it but I totally understand.....It was a just fight...

This film is just great, I personally hope it opens people's eyes to the other side, I mean I am Australian and for 4 years my countrymen shed blood and spilt blood against the Japanese, but this movie really nails home the fact that each man, no matter his side fought for what he thought was right. To the Japanese, the Emporer WAS a God and if you think of it, be Australian, American, British, Japanese or whatever, if your God told you to do something, would you disobey ? Eastwood shocked me with this film just because he truely shows the reality of war from the mostly untold side. Brilliant movie and a true eye-opener in my opinion. 10/10, LEST WE FORGET!

A truly memorable and compassionate piece. Eastwood shows us the humanity of people who were once our \"enemies.\" He handles this difficult subject with style and respect, and delivers an emotional, enveloping tale of men pushed to their brink.

Wow, what an amazing account of the Japanese side of the WWII conflict! This movie was very well thought out and it showed in the caliber of the acting, sets and authenticity of things from that era! 5/5 for such an excellent movie!

Nice to see eastwood having a crack at both sides of the fence on this. Unusual that is the case and this is a pretty good depiction and captures it with ''its about time'' type of feel. I thought flags of our fathers was a poor watch compared to this. For the overall feel of the movie i give it 8/10 and because he managed to build the characters well in a movie which was not easy to do so.
