Peyton Place: Allison MacKenzie looks back on life in the New England town where she grew up around the time of Pearl Harbor. Beneath the town's placid god-fearing exterior lay any number of dark secrets involving sexual attraction and repression, illegitimacy, rape, gossip, intolerance, and class snobbery. No wonder Allison had moved to a quiet place like New York.

What I miss in the movie, though I like it, is the unpleasant, sex-secret driven town Grace Metalious depicts in her novel Peyton Place. These characters pale next to the gossipy, spiteful, immoral people she populated Peyton Place with.

That speech the doc gave towards the end of this movie summed up the people in Peyton Place. A lot of sad moments. Great performance by all the lead actresses.
