While this is an entertaining movie, it is nothing like the real events that inspired this film. This is a terrifying tale based-on the real-life occurrences of Dr. Wolfram Schmidt, a Nazi scientist who in the early 1940's came to US as part of an espionage team to report back to Germany the progress of the Manhattan Project. After the war, he settled in a small town in Nevada where he kidnapped and experimented on local townsfolk from nearby regions so as to not arouse suspicion. In his make-shift basement laboratory, there he performed gruesome experiments in an attempt to produce an 'invincible human,' a man immune to biological disease, extreme temperatures, hunger, and an accelerated immune and healing response. Nearly all of his 'subjects' died, except for five that were known to have survived based on Dr. Schmidt's own laboratory notes. An assistant at the time that posed as his wife also gave her eye-witness testimony that Dr. Schmidt had succeeded in large part to realize his goals of a 'master race' by electrically lesioning a connection to the pituitary gland that in turn was reported to up-regulate adrenaline, human grown hormone, and testosterone, and a host of other biochemical secretions. The result was a person of immense strength, agility, increased intelligence, ability to rapidly heal and recover from bodily damage, and virtually no need for sleep. In every other respect, the person appeared 'ordinary,' as was described in the notes. In March of 1952, Dr. Schmidt killed all his subjects and had his assistant perform the procedure on him. Fearing for her life there after, the assistant fled to the police to report the incident. Authorities stormed the home of Dr. Schmidt and arrested him after making the gruesome discovery of the bodies he had experimented on. News quickly reached the neighboring towns, and a mob raided the jail Dr. Schmidt was being held. The mob took over the jail and pulled Dr. Schmidt out of his cell to hang him. Eyewitnesses there, including Sheriff John Adlers said that it took 'nearly a dozen men' to contain Dr. Schmidt, who appeared to have had the strength of ten men. The mob eventually over-powered Dr. Schmidt and hanged him outside the jail. Accounts claim it took nearly an hour before he appeared to have died, after which he was brought down and found to have had no pulse. He was buried in a local cemetery. Four nights later, however, a cemetery worker said he saw a hand emerging from the soil and eventually Dr. Schmidt climbing out. Terrified, the worker stood still as Dr. Schmidt collected himself and began to dust off the dirt from his clothing. Then the doctor slowly turned toward the worker and stood there silently for a moment and smiled at the worker, then saying in a German accent: 'Lovely night to take a stroll, no?' And then the doctor walked away into the night, never to be seen again.

Awesome sci fi/horror/drama classic. The movie nicely develops the characters and the sci fi part before going into the horror territory. Enjoyed it.
