There were supposed to be 5 seasons originally, and the first two seasons were supposed to cover Caesar's episodes and a little further, expanding on battles and exploits with Pompey. But the show was I guess too costly to continue at the time, even though it was on par with Game of Thrones and should have had the same popularity, but perhaps it was too ahead of its time. A quote from one of the show's co-creators, 'I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end. The second was going to end with the death of Brutus. Third and fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the Messiah in Israel. But because we got the heads-up that the second season would be it, I telescoped the third and fourth season into the second one, which accounts for the blazing speed we go through history near the end. There's certainly more than enough history to go around'. I hope one day it's restarted, because it would be well worth it, and unlike GOT, it's real history, about the birth of a real empire, and the many plots, twists and turns, and clash of cultures, kingdoms, armies, and politics that went with it.

Great show! Got something for everyone exept maybe the youngest. A bit to much blood and gore for them sometimes. Those offended by profane language and nudity may also want to give this one a miss. For everyone else this show is great. I rate it 5/5. I only wish that there was more seasons of it!

9.5/10 This wonderful series goes a long way in showing that humanity still struggles with the same problems faced by the Roman Empire. Different lifestyles but the same basic needs and emotions.

This was a series I thoroughly enjoyed! It may not be completely accurate at times, but, unless you're extremely pedantic, it really won't bother you, as this series will have you invested in it from pretty much the word go. The scripting is high quality, the story lines are great, the cast is superb and my only wish is that it had gone on for many more seasons. If you haven't watched this before, it is all wrapped up nicely, so don't think you'll be left hanging...you won't. You will, however, like me, wish for more!

It's the 'Lord of the Rings' of TV series'. I'd give an Oscar for Marc Antony's scream after reading Cleopatra's letter.

If pressed for an answer I would honestly have to say this best series ever made. Brilliant in every way possible. Even the series running now that are compared to it just can't quite beat it. 10/10

great show...shame they had to reduce the number of seasons to only 2 due to budget cuts by the BBC. They wanted to make 5 seasons and only found out half way through the 2nd season the show was going to end with season 2. That is why it all seems a bit rushed in the end.

One of the best bromance of TV ! Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus always have each others backs no matter what historical crisis is happening. Brilliantly done. Perfect for a binge watching.

thanks for that info Jarus, and btw anyone wanting non textbook places to learn more, heard theres a good series of podcasts called 'History of Rome Podcast' at learnoutloud but havent started listening myself, so cant vouch for it, only see its well reviewed. This was a great series, but rewatching it again just now, decided to stop at s02e07, having had enough of Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo. Were they even historical figures or composites of various people?? Also thought it focused too much on Servilia of the Junii and Atia of the Julii, both nasty characters, but particularly disliked Servilia (mother of Brutus) portraying her as such a delusional, spiteful, twisted wretch, even had to wonder if they exaggerated. And equally wondered if Caesars portrayal lopsided, showing only positive qualities, practically treating him as a hero thruout season 1. And fwiw havent studied Roman history, just felt this series more about entertaining distractions (Vorenus and Pullo) and one dimentional portrayals. However was impressed with its focus on the fine points of culture at the time.

Combining the epic sweep of history with the intimate drama of family life, this gripping series follows two common soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, whose destinies intertwine with those of the most powerful citizens of ancient Rome. Cast:Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson, Polly Walker, Kerry Condon, James Purefoy, Ian McNeice, Coral Amiga, Lindsay Duncan, Lidia Biondi, Tobias Menzies, Nicholas Woodeson, Indira Varma, David Bamber, Chiara Mastalli, Manfredi Aliquo, Suzanne Bertish, Max Pirkis, Lee Boardman, Esther Hall, Ciarán Hinds, Anna Fausta Primiano, Michael Nardone. One of the best made for television series ever made. 5/5 Stars

I just wish they had enough money for this show - it could have lasted at least 6 seasons without getting boring for a second.

I had a couple days off work so I thought I'd kick back and start a new series... began the first episode about two days ago and just finished the last episode. This show really drags you into the story and makes you either love or hate (mostly hate in my case) almost everyone they introduce. Though regardless of how you feel about the characters it's still so gripping that you just have to watch the next episode. Definitely one of my favorite series to date.
