51 Birch Street: Documentary filmmaker Doug Block had every reason to believe his parents' 54-year marriage was a good one. But when his mother dies unexpectedly and his father swiftly marries his former secretary, he discovers two parents who are far more complex and troubled than he ever imagined. 51 Birch Street is a riveting personal documentary that explores a universal human question: how much about your parents do you really want to know?

Wow, excelent idea for a doc, unusual and very personal. His father gives a powerful testemony on doing it for the better of other, a very clear perspective on his wife, her expectations and her needs. A paralell comes to mind between the awareness on his marriage and being conscious but apparently sedated during an operation.

This documentary really makes you think. It depends on how old your parents are but mine were married and had kids at the same time his parents did. Times were definitely different then. I can't imagine living your whole married life that unhappy but divorce wasn't acceptable back then. And of course for the most part, we kids didn't know what they were really going through. They were pretty good at covering it up. As adults, we get it. It's so sad. A lot of them stayed for the children and because it was the right thing to do. The end of this made me feel a deep sadness for all the couples back then who were in loveless marriages - both the men and the women. Excellent documentary. And it really got me thinking about my parents both of whom have passed away.
