What an astounding gem of a movie. I was trapped from the beginning and found myself bound in the hope and will of Johanna. I found myself pondering and researching this topic and one conclusion that i reached is that men has used the bible and religion for a lot of unholy things, the main one is using it to belittle the mantle that God placed on woman to be a helpmate and bearer of seed, not chatel or slavery. Back to the movie..Riveting storytelling and acting and what a range of emotion..4/5

I recall from some other pope movie that the newly elected pope had to submit his genitalia to viewing by a Vatican official in order to confirm the gender of the new pope. This custom would make sense if, at some point, the Vatican had been duped by a woman. This was a pretty good movie. Good acting throughout. Loved the recreation of ancient Rome. Still I question if John Goodman was right for his part. Be careful of the flv versions. They only uploaded half the movie.

Fictitious or not the story is appropriately linking the perilous struggle of all women in society from those dark ages into modern times...good period reconstruction, good acting, mainly in the first half, entertaining to the end...7/10.

We can always find something wrong with a great movie this is why we have critics.

This was a wonderful movie! I've often thought that Tootsie couldn't have been an original idea! Well of course not what with Shakespeare's plays...I enjoyed it.

If you like historical movies, you'll love this one. A truly great film based on a true story, albeit disputed by some. Hollywoodized? Of course. But it made for greater impact in the end. Definitely well worth a watch.

It's a good history movie that begin at the end of Charlemagne's reign and you follow the story of the future Pope Joan. It was not average but not super great either.
