Beautiful screen play I am unlikely to be charmed by romance movies but this one has a certain flair that will play with ones darken humor of romance . odd one.. at best, added to my favorite. So the beauty of this gem is amazing to be seen.. Enroll in a nice course of art baroque or humanities and learn the history behind the paintings this one will be one of the treasure that will be explored upon.. The girl portrait with the glare may have some hidden mystery behind it after all.. ~Raspberry Jtsix~ The painter heart mesmerized by the glaze of a distant pearl Only Hands that have lived to touch, paths of dark and bright souls .. Can only unravel the truth behind the mystery of the enliven stare..

Did anyone else get goosebumps when they showed the painting at the end? Seeing this in person is on my Bucket List...

An exceptional true story which is brilliantly portrayed by Mr Firth and Ms Johansson, and they are supported well by the rest of the cast. Enjoying this film is a great way to spend a slow easy morning or a relaxing evening. The directing is perfection, assuring all of the lighting captures the true direction of Vermeer's way of seeing things before and while painting his masterpieces. Old world art is beyond compare, as is this movie. I truly believe - if you like period movies, art, and a relaxing watch you will really love this movie. Enjoy! 9/10

I'm buying this one for sure now. Scarlett Johansson gave a believable performance. The whole cast should have gotten an award for this one.

Great movie, Colin Firth is brilliant and Scarlet Johansson was exceptional in this character. The only flaw was that it was far too short... I wanted more! 5/5

@PlasticNeoTokyo: The history and culture of England at the time is not really relevant as Vermeer was a Dutch painter and lived his whole life in the same house in The Netherlands, Delft. :P

I don't understand why people wouldn't enjoy or even like this film? Personally, I love films like this. It's worth a watch if you like watching films like 'The Other Boelyn Girl' or 'The Duchess' - 8/10 because I haven't read the book.

Great film, though I haven't read the book so I have no idea of how much is left out or not. Essie Davis (Catharina Vermeer, Johannes Vemeer's wife) was fantastic, as was the rest of the cast. I loved the simple elegance in all of the movie, and the soundtrack. Having watched this movie makes me appreciate the painting a lot more...and of course I'll have to read the book.

Scarlett Johanson was so beautiful, if it was her she would really inspire many artists, heck she even inspired me. the movie was just so beautiful, human emotions was naturally beautiful and depicting it like thus made it more captivating. Colin firth was superb as well.. AH! the bittersweet essence of unrequited love! and Cillian Murphy was so pretty <3!! overall 9/10

Loved it! This is a quiet look at the artist and his family who are supported by a patron. Scarlett does the romantic era beautifully. The little jealous daughter looks just like her movie Dad and she's a trouble maker for the poor maid. 4 out of 5 on this one.
