The Science of Sleep is the cinematic counterpart of a Kafkaesque philosophy engendering the graphic underbelly to a simple story based on the same metaphysical content that Kafka's works are generally replete with. Through the subhuman carnal leanings of the subconscious mind of the dreamy protagonist and his creative genius abounding with a flair for visuals, the director, Michael Gondry, seeks to establish a space-warp that the adultescent is entangled in between chasing his dreams, being offered and working a job he hates, and choosing a girl for himself out of the romantically imperfect women he has been offered. The mysticism inherent in the dreams is not sardonic like that in Kafka's stories but a more modern rendition of the predicament of man who fully comprehends the frivolity of such dreams and is yet awestruck by their magnanimity and their capability to present a collage of his daily emotions each night that he turns in.

I loved all the characters with their social inadequacies/issues, why? No one is perfect on a social level. The two leads were excellent i.e. very believable in an unbelievable/dream-like setting. I think it reminded me of when I was a child, making up stories and acting them out. I was intrigued from start to finish. 4/5

Really floaty and visually beautiful tale of love and loss that captures certain feelings perfectly.

This movie was mindfuckingly amazing. I am really into dreams and the subconscious and this movie showed the extreme absurdity of the two. It ended up getting so weird but yet still understandable ulteriorly. 9/10

Exceptionally artsy, warm and surreal. Apart from the abrupt/awkwardly written ending, I really liked the visual style. A dreamer's daydream. Charlotte Gainsbourg is absolutely amazing too.

While it is a gem, this film and its protagonist are disturbed/disturbing, and on multiple levels. And I believe they are meant to be, though, maybe a better job could have been made of demonstrating how socially dysfunctional it/he is intended to be. That said, the filmmaker, though clumsy with the technique (IMHO) DOES conveys that, and conveys it pretty explicitly in places. I am not sure how that is missed so much. My best advice: keep your eyes on the small details, because there are so many things that add up. One thing I would discourage is listening to all the comparisons to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, at least, if you have an exacting mind, b/c they are really dissimilar beasts at heart. Too, Eternal Sunshine was deft from start to finish, and this film is more clumsy and gangly than that--the comparisons are really more superficial than you're led to believe (I was disappointed more in this film than I should have been b/c of those comparisons). Anyway, I think too much was left on the editing floor, and as Eternal Sunshine is in a tie as my all-time favorite movie, I can't honestly say this one is that kind of caliber, though it is very good: 7/10.
