Sorstalanság: An Hungarian youth comes of age at Buchenwald during World War II. György Köves is 14, the son of a merchant who's sent to a forced labor camp. After his father's departure, György gets a job at a brickyard; his bus is stopped and its Jewish occupants sent to camps. There, György find camaraderie, suffering, cruelty, illness, and death. He hears advice on preserving one's dignity and self-esteem. He discovers hatred. If he does survive and returns to Budapest, what will he find? What is natural; what is it to be a Jew? Sepia, black and white, and color alternate to shade the mood.

The film is long but very compelling and speaks loudly about man's inhumanity to his fellow man. The message is even more disturbing when told through the eyes of a young teenager who is caught up in the atrocities of the Nazis and their Hungarian allies.

He became a writer and wrote he was as stripped of his freedom by the Communists when he arrived back to Budapest as he had been by the Nazis. The Soviet dictatorship subjugated him for being an intellectual, the Communists who displaced thousands of Hungary's best writers, teachers, thinkers into forced labor camps, humiliated them, made life miserable for them. Kertesz, who wrote the book this film is based on, finally fled to West Germany, and resides in Berlin today. He won the Nobel prize for literature.

10/10 ! wow! This movie was amazing , well acted and the movie was made in such a way that you have time to reflect between scenes on what you have just seen previously. You can feel the emotions of the boy and you are there with him feeling those emotions. The movie manages to pull you in , very clever - never has a movie done this to me before. When the boy looks at the german soldier eating your mouth will water for the boy .I watched this with subtitles ( and never do usually ) but that wasnt a problem ....this is a MUST SEE movie if interested in the holocaust. Wow!
