Lovely gem of a flick, with each actor portraying their particular character to the Nth degree. If you like your movies dark and gritty, you can't pass this one by. 4.5/5 Thank you uplinkers.

Damn this movie is good, yet probably overlooked by most. It is truly dark and haunting. I was completely drawn into the depth and realism of the characters, their relationships, and the black spiraling abyss that the story pulls you into. This is as close to real life darkness as you can get in a film. Petersen's character was a true talent. Beneath, Dreamalittledream said it perfectly: film buffs will love this movie, while others may not appreciate it being made in the 80's.

First of the Hannibal Lector trilogy. Each of the films in the trilogy has a totally different atmosphere and dialogue types. I personally was more intrigued by the killer in this film than I was with Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. The killer in Manhunter gets a lot of screen time so you can get inside his head and see what his weaknesses are. Petersen does an excellent job driven by intensity and vulnerability at the same time. Hannibal is my favorite of the three films probably because it gives strong closure to the storyline yet still leaves open some possibilities based on Lector's nature.

One of my favourite films and possibly Michael Mann's finest. William Peterson has never been better and Brian Cox gives a haunting performance as Dr Lector. Far superior to the pointless, god awful Red Dragon.

I think this is one of the greatest movies generated during the 1980's. The acting and action scenes were outstanding. Strong performances and build up of drama/suspense throughout and you never knew what to expect to happen next. Excellent ending. This is truly 5/5 all the way - (just never mind the music and 80's shorts!)

One of my favorite films from the Hannibal series . William Peterson has never been better and Brian Cox gives a haunting performance as Dr Lector. I didn't even know it existed until today, when a friend recommended it.

I had to rewatch this because frankly I didn't care for it when I saw it in the 80's because it was nothing like the Red Dragon novel it was supposed to be based from. In watching again, and with a bit of 80's nostalgia as I was 19 when this movie came out, I can appreciate it more, especially after reading the other novels and watching the other Hannibal Lector movies. This was really just a step above a B-movie in the 80's when it came out. It was not a big hit on the big screen, and pretty much went the way of today's straight-to-dvd releases, but to VHS. Reviews of it pretty much called it sub-par, and it is still only a little-known gem. In all honesty, while it IS a good movie, I agree with the comment to not compare it with other Lector movies. In fact, only a diehard need watch this, as it is so far out from the actual series you can skip it altogether and never miss a thing storywise. If you have not seen all the movies or read the novels, do yourself a favor. If you must watch this, watch it FIRST. THEN watch Red Dragon, as it is actually the first story in the series. Silence of the Lambs comes next, and finally Hannibal. Then if you are a diehard fan, watch Hannibal Rising, which is pretty much like the Bates Motel series- a story of a YOUNG Lector, prior to being a psych. Then watch the Hannibal tv series, which tells the story of his capture, alluded to in the Red Dragon novel via flashbacks.

Excellent 80's thriller. This one actually shows the main character's internal struggle to overcome his past, as well as his hunt for the new enemy. Typical Michael Mann portrayal of complex characters. Wish more directors did that...

1986. Iron Butterfly. Interesting score. De Laurentis and Michael Mann. Combo pack. This is a classic for the genre. I found this film interesting and this is my third watch over a period of quite a few years. I still found myself stressing at different points of this film. It still gets my attention. Good story that has been carried through by Hopkins, Foster and others. Worth the watch. I give it a 5/5 for being there.

I was always inspired to study the strange when I watched movies like this. Grant it Hopkins will always be Hannibal, but I do prefer the older movies to the remakes. The remake of Manhunter was Red Dragon, and with an outstanding cast it shown its abilities to bring in viewers. But Manhunter will always hold the flame for the beginning of the Hannibal series to me.

Manhunter really gave me the creeps, and it was difficult for me to watch in 1986 because it's pretty darn creepy! This is a true classic! The cast is great, William Peterson is awesome, Dennis Farina and Brian Cox are great, and Tom Noonan is extremely, amazingly horrific and convincing as the killer "Francis"; he gave a tremendous performance! I hope you all enjoy and try to remember that Manhunter is 25 years old; it is the first movie in the "Hannibal Lecktor" movie series. For true film buffs, you WILL love Manhunter! This film got rave reviews from many great critics in 1986 and thereafter. If you don't like 80's movies, then this movie may not be for you. Enjoy! :-)

Finally an original with a decent lead. Now Jodie Foster is sick but William Petersen rules as always. Plus Cox as the original Hannibal Lecter was unmatched even by Hopkins but only cuz Cox looks like a psycho. 8/10 for sure.

well now I can see why they cast Hugh Dancy in the hannibal tv series he and William peterson are very similar, the special effects are better now than they were in the 80s obviously but the technique Will uses is basically the same. Im glad i watched this movie, even though it was made 14 yrs earlier its still better than the newer red dragon movie.
