first off, i didn't really like this movie. the concept was great but the execution left something to be desired. it would have been better to have dropped the whole "rock & roll will save the world" theme as it felt too forced. it's like the creators wanted it in there no matter what. the music wasn't even all that good. the only characters i liked were dizzy and stretch, the rest of them didn't have much personality, especially omar. he seemed like a generic background character, the movie gave no reason to care about him, he was a dick to everybody, and had absolutely no depth. and he ends up saving the day? it's like they needed a twist ending and threw him in there to make it happen. (also it was obvious from the scene where moc was searching for the one that could stop him that it was going to end up being omar.) i mean, i can see they tried to make him the "bad boy" but as the second main character he still needed to be likable. angel was more likeable but again no character depth, no reason to care. all i know about her is she's sweet, and with nothing else to go on that makes her feel out of place in an edgy garage band in a post apocalyptic future. Moc was disgusting to look at and his actions had no clear motivation. first it was "i want to be immortal" then at the end it's "i want demons powers" evil for the sake of evil is the laziest form of villain writing. all in all there were too many characters to flesh out in the limited time so they ended up not getting anything done,, a good example being the ending with the henchman brothers. zip sacrificing himself was surprising and out of character, i didn't see it coming because the way they set him up. the entire movie he's shown to be an idiot with one short scene where he sees a children's tv show that made him question his morals and it wasn't really clear what he took away from that, then he sacrifices himself. the story should have built upon that more to make sacrificing himself the next logical step in his path to redemption. character development, or rather lack of character development, aside, the background art was beautiful you can tell a lot of work went into it. the animation was amazing, really well done, but some parts somewhat with angel but especially with omar it's clear they relied a little too heavily on rotoscoping and it was a little distracting. i think if they had had a bigger budget and polished the character designs and developed them a little more (maybe even cut a few unnecessary characters out) then this could have been a really good movie..... (also who the heck is whatsherface supposed to be? a master of disguise? a hired assassin? a henchwoman conveniently unseen until that very moment? it wasn't really explained and was completely unnecessary as he could have easily done that entire bit with a hologram since he's already demonstrated multiple times how indistinguishable from reality they are. once again, too many characters.)
