A classic work of art - up there with Seven Samurai and Seppuku and Rashomon. Ozu draws a whole family of characters together and drives them through the hardest parts of living and he does it with no fuss and lots of decorum. Family and blood do not necessarily create love; love lies in the individual and his/her basic humanity and will to care for those worthy of care. How we judge worthiness is a whole other set of philosophical questions that we are left to ponder after the film is over: 5/5 - my highest rating for any film on here.

Often in the top ten best film list of all times....nearly 60 years old, still hitting you as hard as ever and showing that many feelings are eternal...a masterpiece,a must watch,5/5.

The final part of Yasujiro Ozu’s loosely connected ‘Noriko’ trilogy is a devastating story of elderly grandparents brushed aside by their self-involved family. Luminous Ozu regular Setsuko Hara plays daughter-in-law Noriko. Alhough not the same character as the Norikos she plays in Late Spring (1949) and Early Summer (1951), the films are considered a loose trilogy.

Remarkable film. Great style. A classic. This movie was made about 5 years after the Pacific War of WWII ended and to borrow from TS Elliott - not with a whimper but with a bang. This touching movie is exquisite. I watched this about 5 years ago. Nice to see it here. Criterion does it again. Thank you uplinkers. Pure Platinum.

Now this one brings you to that place in your heart. It is very deep and bereaved. I can't believe from 1953 and into 2014, it's still a moving film. 5 stars.

I loved it. So moving, visceral. What ungrateful children. Sad, dark. 8/10

One of the best movies ever made. Ozu's style adds so much to the history of cinema that it is impossible not to appreciate it. His middle class family drama in post-war Japan captured human nature like few other movies. To those of you who love cinema, this is a precious gem.

I like his new styles that he introduced into the movement of film compared to the classical Hollywood; definitely an "interesting" way to have the viewers interact with the film. Overall though, not my favourite but I will rate it a 3.7/5!
