at the time this came out, we were not yet up to our our eyeballs into post apocalyptic shock movies, war movies, splatter movies, tv-war shows etc pp., plus, when this came out, the threat was very real and awareness just starting to grow. It is perhaps hard to judge this movie from a present stand point. Growing up in a devided Germany, with walls, fences with shooters and mines dividing not only a country but two powerful blocks, with allied bases all over West Germany and the Russians just over the border in the East, families ripped apart and growing apart by different ideologies, knowing that probably 2 or 3 miles from your home nuclear weapons were resting...and that the west and the east were on the brink of war.... Not one strong allied force against a country or terrorism but two very strong blocks facing each other with equal weaponery and opposite ideology, I doubt those growing up now can relate. All I know is that this is the only movie ever where I experienced that after the movie no one in the theatre said a word and all went out in total silence.

I saw this when I was 12yrs old. It aired on OTA television one of the big 3 back then, and it scared the hell out me and my friends. Growing up in the early '80's you were either going to die of a Nuke attack or if you had sex Aids... super scary time.

simply, a masterpiece of cinema and Jason robards exquisite performance....the best nuclear war film you will ever have the despairing feeling to watch...at times too realistic....a masterpiece....10/10

Interesting depiction, now sorely dated, no less horrifying in concept...4/5

A very worthwhile film to get stuck into. Yes, it has aged, but the events are probably as acurate as they could get at the time, however, I fear we have a better understanding of such events now; therefore, as quite a few have already said, they should remake this film with at least as much sentiment as they did this one .i.e. spend less on SFX and more on script, actors and storyline. 5/5

This was a bit too realistic, in some ways. It actually got my heart racing and my breathing shallow and fast. It may be dated but it was so well depicted that it stands the test of time. I remember having nuclear bomb emergency practices in my school as a very young child living in Florida. The story presented in this film was all too possible and very much a part of our daily lives at one point in time. I fervently hope those days never return...

Awesome film. But people can't just go walk around immediately after a nuclear attack. You would be dead from radiation within hours.

Pretty good movie, holds up alright for the modern day. Must have been a hell of a lot scarier in the 80's where the threat of nuclear war still hung in the air. Threads does just as good a job and provides much more of longer term affects of such nuclear destruction. This film does a better job of the short term immediate effects to only a few people. We may not have the Russians as much of threat as back then, but events like these can still happen in the future as more nuclear powers emerge and tensions rise. Watch Threads if you liked this movie. 8/10

Not a bad movie given the times it was made . There is a certain realism to it but not completely like radiation sickness for example. The movie portrays some aspects of it but not all. In anycase a remake of this flick would be great.

This is such a great classic. Really tense and has a strong claustrophobic feel to. The setting for it is perfect because if a thing like this happened now,it's easier to convey the message and get the updates on what is happening but just imagine how it would have been back then. This movie captures perfectly the paranoia, fear and the anxiety that the people would have felt back then. There are scenes just show some people building nuclear shelters and some trying to reach their loved ones through payphones with so much people in line. Scenes like this accurately showed the story's purpose. Great movie worth watching.

What a film. Never heard of this film till I heard about it on youtube. The beginning was a bit slow. And was ready to turn off around the 17min mark. But stuck with it and glad I did. I would believe this would be a cult classic type of movie. Well worth the 1 time watch. The end of the movie was very inspiring. And hope if something ever like this did happen to us. That we could help one another as this one man did. I would suggest this movie to any one that enjoys post apocalypse or the apocalypse type of movies.

I thought "Threads" and "Testament" were so much better than this one - this erred on being Hollywood for me.. something that could be shown on prime time. Both the others were more about the aftermath. Jane Alexander was just amazing in Testament. Nuclear War is not an option. Fail Safe was excellent to - for it's kind and day.. and By the Dawn's Early Light with Powers Boothe as well, there was a movie about a virus that Olivia Hussey in it that was good - it's on here too. There are some good movies here. I always liked the original On the Beach better than the remake - but, after Gregory Peck.. what can one say ;-) I think it's not .. prudent, and to offend anyone, to think that these scenarios aren't possible these days - just watching the news.. Iran - even if they don't have the capability, people think they do.. and for people to really believe that there aren't the numbers in weapons anymore - there are.. thousands and thousands.. and the risk of some terrorist group and dirty bombs, without even touching on viruses - weaponizing them. It's a scary world and I just pray we don't close our eyes to that because it's easier not to think about it. There are some truly sociopathic people out there who justify horrors in the name of religion or politics or race, or only the Good Lord knows.. - and I think we should worry about the homegrown terrorists just as much - in each of our countries, we are none of exempt from crazy people. I want no more wars - I know that's a fantasy, but it reminds me of a saying when I was a teenager - "What if they gave a war and nobody went." The only problem with movies like The Day After is that they end at the dropping of the bomb - within a week of it. That's why, I think anyway, Threads and Testament speak so much better to why we can never allow it to happen. Off the soapbox.

This movie was made during the Cold War, in a time when a war between communistic USSR and the USA was an ongoing threat. This movie made such a huge impression on me, mainly because of the realistic portrayal of human suffering during the aftermath. Maybe this movie is more relevant now than ever. As the end credits state: -it is hoped that the images from this film will inspire the nations of the earth, their peoples and leaders to find the means to avert the fateful day.- 4/5.
