What is easily missed amid the 'carefree childhood' stuff is the speed with which 'motel kids' have to grow up, with very little guidance. Their parents don't know success, so where will they get the blueprint for life? They have fantasies about what school is really like. Director Sean Baker has been crowned "the most humanist filmmaker" of this generation and that's apparent in his observation of this segment of society. There were numerous times these kids could have been harmed, destroyed or disappeared. I hugely appreciate the point-of-view through their eyes. Willem Dafoe is amazing. "Bobby" doesn't judge his tenants and he knows he can't solve everything in their lives; but he does what he can.

This movie bored the hell out of me and I can't understand why people are making such a big deal about this movie because it wasn't that great. I spent an hour in the half of my time(which, I will never get back)watching a group of kindergartners scream, run, and make fools of themselves while their parent's hide inside their motel rooms doing lord knows what with their time. The best and only good thing about this movie is William Defoe who I believe deserves an Oscar for holding this bore-fest together.

Absolutely brilliant movie! It was incredible to see the kids' resiliency, adaptability, and social growth. Bria Vinaite was awesome as mom, doing her best to raise a child in circumstances many of us don't know anything about. And Willam Dafoe was excellent as usual. I loved every minute of this. ((ps. I believe this should be under new releases))

This was one of the few movies I was really looking forward to. It just exudes life's pleasures and pains through its unique cinematography. Willem Dafoe's acting was top notch. But have to big up Brooklynn Prince, what a fine, carefree child actress she is. Everything she does seems effortless and full of passion. Kid has a lot of potential and a bright future.

Probably the most intriguing, simplified but yet so enriched and sincere film of all these projects which are pushed for the academy and did actually watch in a theater so far...i love its naturalism, i love how the scenery has its own part and it is so alive almost embracing each character, i really loved the fact that it is somodern and fresh but it has this classic warm feeling...of course the cast is fundamental and the Dafoe factor, this force of nature which i always had a soft spot for but only realised when i actually had the priviledge to watch up there on a stage live once some time ago what he's all about...not my top fav of this season but definitely one of the actually good Academy pushed films which as a viewer means pretty much nothing to me as a fact and a quite essential viewing in a theater.

This movie was sad for me. I used to live in that area south of Disney World. It's worse in real life than what is portrayed in the movie. All the motels are filled with day labors, crack heads, hoookers, and families that are down on their luck because they can't get a regular home because their credit sucks. I remember when Highway 192 was hopping back in the 90's. The businesses never recovered from 9-11. Most of 192 is a ghost town now with lots of empty retail spaces. Sad.

I don’t understand how anyone can say this was a bad movie, I would imagine if you did you must be so detached from reality. It’s showing an extremely accurate depiction of the lives of so many of these kids, their parents, and their surroundings. Showing what it’s like in these places that aren’t middle to upper class towns. The way the mom acts is so on point to how some of these people really are. They’re also just all trying to survive, most of them with children long before they were ever ready to take care of one. Great movie in my opinion

This film is a remarkable look at the lives of at-risk children through their eyes. They don't realize the perils lurking nearby, they're having fun and breaking rules.

Loved this! Raw realistic movie. That was probably some of the best child acting I've ever seen.

BEST MOVIE I've seen in a long time! A work of art. Absolutely brilliant acting, setting, story-telling and points of view. The little actress who plays Moonee deserves an Oscar. Dafoe, a nomination. Such a beautiful film and sadly, I'm afraid, one for these strange times. The Holden Caulfield has surfaced in me large and though I can't save daughter and mom, maybe I can go make someone's day a little better.

I forced myself to like this movie for its sincerity and hyper realism but got very upset in the end for the lack of redeeming messages, the over stated squalor and the repetitive free for all attitude...painful watch of a stereotyped sordid reality,so what??...5/10.

i enjoyed it even though it was slow and didnt particulary take you anywhere at the end...but it's sad to see mom and child like this. ... superb acting by everyone.

Felt this was a half hour too long and was pretty tedious. Maybe that was the point though, showing the tediousness and futility of the mother's life as she tried to care for her daughter.

I read about the real life people this is about and feel somewhat sorry for them. The kids in this act like brats as does the mother of the six-year-old girl. The mother smirks in acting like it is no big deal that the kids are acting like future criminals in the wrong things they do to other people and even peddle for money - so wrong, if these people act like this in real life, they get what they deserve. I must be missing something in the high reviews for this film, the story was one dimensional, not that good, the ending is just like so many Hollywood films, no conclusion. I give it 2 out of 5 stars.
