Vengeance: A Love Story Comments

There is, I believe, a cottage industry built around hating anything to do with Nicolas Cage. And it manifests itself without fail here on PrimeWire in the form of worst-rating-possible always and comments fields filled with snide, impertinent off-topic remarks. While I can't pretend to fathom the minds of people driven to watch (yeah, right) Nick Cage movies and then spend the time to craft clever insults about the man and the production, I can tell you that this movie was at least as good most others of the genre and, for me, a cut above. Slow to ramp up, to be sure, ''Vengeance'' delivers exactly what it promised and leaves the viewer with a bitter-sweet ending. True to the granddaddy of them all, ''Deathwish,'' Nick Cage delivers a fine role as a detective pushed by a dystopic justice system to find ultimate justice for the victims. Duck the brickbats, plug your ears to the cat-callers, hold your nose to the potty-mouths and, if you like the genre, watch it. It's a pretty good story.

Is it true that Nicolas Cage in last few years made so many bad movies your brain wants to bleed out watching them? Yes. Is this movie like that? No. To not give out any spoilers, watch it yourself and give it a fair chance before judging bad or good. For sure this isnt Oscar winning movie but i must admit it was a surprise, and good one. Based on previous Nicolas Cage movies i would say 4/5.

Several years ago, in the aftermath of the 07-09 Great Recession, Cage's property holdings went down in smoke. It was around that time that the IRS went after Cage for years of unpaid taxes. Cage blamed his former business manager for the bad investments and unpaid taxes, while the guy accused him of being a spendthrift. Regardless, Cage was broke, and had to sell some of his most prized possessions to pay the IRS (including a 1930s comic book that features the first appearance of Superman). It wasn't enough though. Since most of Hollywood's major movies take a couple of years to produce, Cage was forced to take up quick acting gigs to pay for his taxes and provide him with income. However, after a string of B-grade straight to videos movies, major studios avoided him. And Cage had to continue to act in B-grade movies to pay the bills. Cage currently lives in a bungalow in Las Vegas worth about £300-500k - and I think he's still paying the IRS. Regardless, Vengeance: A Love Story is watchable, and the acting is decent despite the weak script. My only complaint is the absence of Cage's trademarked manic expressions.

Nick Cage on Lifetime Channel. I give it 10 for boring, 10 for slow, 10 for crappy. 1/50 overall score. Has been actors don't die, they star in Nicolas Cage movies.

Someone wake me when he does another film as good as Lord of War.

I think it was the emotional story that made NC's performance memorable. In any case, this was a really good film.

If Cage can put out more decent movies like this he may make somewhat of a comeback.8/10

This is a bad movie. Cage's films of late, the past few decades, seem to be really awful. This won't disappoint you if you don't expect anything from it. I find it curious that Cage would be a part of this disaster. I can only surmise that he is being forced by his IRS debt to take any work offered, regardless of the caliber of the production values. Cage seems like an abused old dog who still clings to his abusive master because of the food it's given. IMDB says he is 53 but he looks like he is in his 70's.

This was a great vehicle for Cage. Would like to see more. Not a family flick, but Karmatic justice fast tracked, with a pinch of enjoyment ... 8/10

Unlike, it seems, most folks here, I actually love Nicolas Cage. I think he's a mess of gonzo fun in campy modern cult films like ''Con Air'', ''Face/Off'' and ''Wild At Heart'', and a manic and brilliant oddity in more serious fare like ''Adaptation'', ''Leaving Las Vegas'' and ''Matchstick Men'' - this batshit crazy whackadoo who's never seen a script he doesn't like can at times be profoundly moving and captivating on screen and has an Oscar and a long resume to show for it - but man, this movie is straight up nonsense. Based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates?! My god, it must have been adapted by a fourth grader and his big brother with ADD and no concept of pacing, editing, narrative structure nor for that matter how not to make your characters sound like droids who've uploaded half of a monosyllabic dictionary when they're doing a bit of exposition... or enough exposition to fill that entire Niagara Falls location this flick was shot in. Also, just to point out - it seems that an entire relationship between Cage's character and Don Johnson's character was entirely written out of the film, because they have a heated exchange in the last few minutes of the film that seems predicated on nothing except the basic stereotypical role they each see themselves as playing (and then Johhnson hilariously rides off on a motorcycle like he missed his CHIPS audition). I apologize for the length of this review, but I just wanted to be thorough because this is time I will not be getting back - I'm glad to mark off another piece of Cage's oeuvre that I've now watched, but Nic's gotta start picking some better stuff.

Great flick though there were a few more people needed killing in this. I love Nick Cage movies. Some aren`t so good and some are awesome. Not every movie is an oscar worthy film and to blame him alone is just wrong. He`s a great actor and Leaving Las Vegas is still one of my favorites.

It's a good movie for what it is, the acting is not bad, the script is not bad, a bit predictable. A "deathwish" kind of story.

I like Nicolas Cage. And this movie wasn't bad. But there wasn't much there. It seemed like a generic script that has been done before. Just seemed like there wasn't much story going on at all. No back story into anything really. Rape, failed court, killed them all, the end. That described everything. There is no story in between those things happening. Hopefully what I was trying to say came through. And made a little bit of sense. It is worth a one time watch though. Just don't expect some elaborate story with any kind of twists and turns.
