Spirits of the Dead: Three directors each adapt a Poe short story to the screen: "Toby Dammit" features a disheveled drugged and drunk English movie star who nods acceptance in the Italian press and his producers fawn over him. "Metzengerstein" features a Mediveal countess who has a love-hate relationship with a black stallion - who, it turns out is really her dead lover. "William Wilson" tells the story of a sadistic Austrian student with an exact double whom he later kills.

I found this highly intriguing, extremely well-done, and rather beautiful to watch. Vadim's segment "Metzengerstein" was gorgeous, and had an excellent cast. Fonda was great, and the costumes were stunning. Not only was the plot entertaining, but it also had a deep meaning. Louis Malle's segment "William Wilson" was equally stunning to watch with handsome cinematography, and a simple, but engaging and important plot. Fellini's segment "Toby Dammit" was dazzling to look at, and extremely well acted. The roles were more demanding of the actors, but that definitley didn't effect the outcome of the film, or at least not in a negative way. This is a must see foreign horror film directed by three masters.

Sad that no one will have the opportunity to see some old foreign horror. Movies with no links should not be posted in the first place.

I first saw this film, and the 3 stories, during the 60's;you can tell how different the era was,by the fashions in the show in Italy, and by Jane Fonda's makeup.Radical!we actually did wear miniskirts, and strange clothing then, and lots of hair.the first two stories tell of conflicted, self destructive people,as does the 3rd;the best two are :"Toby Dammit"and "William Wilson";great collection, very artistic, ironic, stylishly done.Fellini's tale is particularly well acted, and ironic in it's depiction of celebrity and show business.I recommend the collection.I wish they made films this good nowadays.
