I was stupid enough to see this movie in the theater. What a waste of time and money that was! So it is based on the story of Nat Turner a literate slave who was later chosen by the locals to preach to his fellow slaves with the intent of keeping them docile and obedient to their masters. After visiting several plantations and witnessing the cruel treatment some of them were subject to he begins to believe that God called him to liberate his people from slavery. What does he do in response to this divine call? He starts a slave uprising and spends almost two whole days killing white folks in their homes as they slept including women and children! He then tries to go against the military and gets his ass handed to him and makes a hasty escape. As a result of his actions many slaves that were a part of it are hanged while he remains in hiding. Instead of liberating the slaves or even making things better for them he made things worst! So,I ask what was the point of this movie? To elevate a deluded murderer to the status of a hero? This movie has nothing to do with the birthing of a nation. In fact, it is nothing but a story of a nut who committed terrible acts of mass murder under the influence of his delusions.

I am honestly baffled whenever I see anyone of color subscribe to Christianity. Slave owners used the bible as defense in what they did. Many places in the bible speaks about slaves obeying their masters. As well as horrible, derogatory remarks about a certain type of people in the bible that white slave owners and even still Christian racists today, say speaks about people of color. I feel so sick in the pit of my stomach to know this. There are some things that people do not speak of when they speak of slavery. Like about when some people talk about how slavery was so long ago and how people of color today shouldn't be effected by it. Ignorance is bliss but it is still ignorance. There were things taken away and lost forever to these people and for every generation that comes and goes. Ancestry. Heritage. A families true name. How many people do you think are walking around today and writing down the surname of their families past master as their own because they lost theirs? They probably don't even think about it, I hope they don't. And their native spirituality, it's ways, customs and beliefs, have all been washed away here and replaced by the very religion that was used as a tool to enslave them. Just let all that sink in. You don't have to agree with me. I know what I know. Blessed Be to all.

10/10 A very powerful movie! Really Awesome and Great! No porn or nudity. No grossing out violence but extremely impacting and heart felt. I'll recommend it to my friends and watch it again once the non-theater version comes out! Hope they make another movie like that that focuses on how the Catholics forced Christianity upon the Native Americans and Mexican Indians after they invaded Mexico and created California and so on.

Really well done film. Saw it in the theater and was actually surprised at how good it was. Reviews have been very mixed so I kept waiting for the movie to get bad but it stayed extremely consistent throughout. Truly impressive debut by Nate Parker.

@warensamble, Same goes for much of the U.S. through media, political party does not matter much here any more, the illusion of it mattering is what counts. The U.S. is mostly filled with what I like to call "Sheeple" with their eyes wide shut. It is a shame.

Oh dear lawd what did I just witness? The idea was sound, the execution was sad. I'm embarrassed for everyone involved. This should have been handled better.

That was a powerful movie But it does not leave you in a good mood. Too bad it won't get the recognition it deserves.

As always with heavy subjects like slavery, there's bound to be controversy and negativity. I'm just going to give my opinion on the movie. I thought it was a very powerful movie, with a great cast, very good acting and the settings came across as very realistic. Whatever you feel about the subject or historic inaccuracies, this movie is worth a watch. Nate Parker wrote the script, directed and played the lead, a very impressive accomplishment...

First of all id like to thank the uploaders for uploading this. Was worried for a bit it wasnt gonna make the cut lol. As for the movie i really enjoyed the acting. Though tbh i felt it could've been a bit longer. Not it that felt rushed by any means but the movie just seemed to climax very quickly towards the end. Not to mention there was TONS more that couldve been added to the plot that was left out but i guess they wanted to keep things simple. As for all the haters, anyone who has a problem with this movie has a problem with history. Simple as that. Thanks for the upload 9/10!

Undeniably a powerful film, despite the controversy. 3 stars is a joke. 5 stars from me to counteract the bias.

I put off watching this for a minute. I knew what I was going to get for the most, my only issue is knowing the story of Nat Turner and hearing that this film would have some graphic scenes. I have no need of watching excessively violent films and TV. However it was not as bad as I had heard and that was a plus(not sure if this copy has deleted scenes or not) This story, and not because of Nat Parker, has had a lot of controversy surrounding it. In fact over the years there have been a few different takes on Nat Turner, mostly surrounding his confession when caught, how he actually was caught, and I even think how many slave owners and their family where actually killed. About the Nat Parker part, whether you have reservations about him as a person or not it doesn't stop you from actually learning about true events. I suggest you open a few browser windows and look up a little information. There is also a documentary on youtube called the The Legacy of Nat Turner. Some say he was actually a crazy person, others say he was a child of god meant for that purpose. Either way, learning the bible and being subjected to the existence that slaves where had to have a mixed emotional affect on a person. Can't nobody tell me that enduring what slaves went through in the Antebellum period wasn't cause for some serious PTSD. Furthermore actually researching the subject and not just taking into account what a film will show and what people with obvious agendas will say, will turn up these facts: 1. Nat Turner's rebellion did not extend slavery itself. Slavery was never in danger of being abolished at the time, slave owners were doubling down and opposing abolitionist fiercely. In fact several abolitionist made the argument prior to the rebellion that slavery would cause something like what happened. (look up David Walker and Thomas Jefferson. What the rebellion did do was stop whites from letting slaves preach without a white man present. 2. There were several other slave rebellions that happened though not as known before the war began. Whites were scared to death after the rebellions, even with the killing of thousand of slaves who had nothing to do with them, many wanted to expedite the abolishment of slavery, and even set blacks up in their own colony for fear of another rebellion on a bigger scale. 3. When slave owners tightened their grip on slaves abolitionist had had enough. Some thought the only way to end slavery was by doing exactly what Nat Tuner did and John Brown a white abolitionist actually tried to start a slave rebellion after the fact and it is believed his attempt and hanging is what started the Civil War(Sidenote: I think Quentin Taratino is still thinking of making a John Brown film) To me what the film and others like it do is highlight the need for the history of black people to be taught in schools and not suppressed like it has been for many years. There would no need for this kind of back and forth or divide. No need to have to choose between seeing a film and trying gauge a moral compass, and btw I see you Primewire and appreciate the removal of MOST of the hate filled comments. Hadn't done much of that for other black films but it is appreciated. I give the film 3 of 5 stars. I took liberties which is what hollywood does, I am just not sure why it did or if it was really necessary. A decent film on a very important individual.

I thought it was powerful all through.. It did take a little longer to get to the point.. But, I liked it.. Nate Parker has potential to become a great director.. And he is a good actor.. You got people complaining because the movie makes them uncomfortable as always.. But I do agree Iken that this is a story that needs to be told.. Lol..

A bit slow, but some powerful moments, from a story that really needs to be heard, especially today..... That whole "Strange Fruit" scene at the end was the most powerful imagery I've seen in a film probably ever. Though morbid, I wish there were more intense scenes like that one. I just feel like overall this film missed a bit of the intensity that a story like this one could have given us. Like I wish there were more scenes of Nat actually preaching, especially right before and during the revolt. And I wish they went further with his dream sequences. If you're really going to go there and show that Nat had visions, then really go there. I think this whole film was just too much of a soft retelling of his story. When with a character like Nat and all the different variations of his life that have been put out there over 200 years and all the folklore surrounding him, they really could have made the most powerful movie ever. I mean even the face off battle scene on the street was kind of soft in its approach. I know they were trying to minimize the blood shed and gore of the story, but by doing that I really think they did Nat's story a disservice. A story like this demands to be presented with all the intensity that the subject of slavery and insurrection has to offer. And I don't think this did it justice. A+ for finally putting the Nat Turner story out to the mainstream. But 3/5 overall as a film. What I mostly get from this story though, is that symbols are very powerful. Whether religious, social or otherwise they have the power to move ppl. Which is why this film and other accounts of Nat Turner and people like him have been destroyed or sabotaged over the years. And this film showed that. Though it could've done a better job at it, it did show how something as symbolic as religion could pacify an entire group of people into submission, or inspire them to revolt, regardless of who holds that power, or who is under the will of that power. Either way religion and symbols and rhetoric have been and still are the most powerful tools in making or breaking any kind of movement or system. And morality is having that knowledge and using it for the right reasons. But unfortunately we live in a society that thrives in the moral grey area. So noone really knows what the right reasons are, or who's version of them we should believe in. So again A+ because this is a story that needs to be told, but 3/5 because it could have been told a lot better.

GOOD MOVIE! The most interesting thing about this movie for me is the slave master did one of the most dangerous thing u could do and that's TEACH A SLAVE THE BIBLE. Once a slave knows that God is on the side of the oppressed and not the rich masters its KILLING TIME.LOL Am from a White and Black family so I can watch this with a open mind good but not great. 8/10

I appreciated the movie it was good imo. I don't understand why ppl are so racist in these comments. Why do movies like this make you so uncomfortable that you need to hide behind your keyboard typing pathetic immature comments about an awful time in history? Probably the same type of person that would sit still shitting themselves if they were on a plane getting hijacked by a few dudes holding box cutters.
