I was stupid enough to see this movie in the theater. What a waste of time and money that was! So it is based on the story of Nat Turner a literate slave who was later chosen by the locals to preach to his fellow slaves with the intent of keeping them docile and obedient to their masters. After visiting several plantations and witnessing the cruel treatment some of them were subject to he begins to believe that God called him to liberate his people from slavery. What does he do in response to this divine call? He starts a slave uprising and spends almost two whole days killing white folks in their homes as they slept including women and children! He then tries to go against the military and gets his ass handed to him and makes a hasty escape. As a result of his actions many slaves that were a part of it are hanged while he remains in hiding. Instead of liberating the slaves or even making things better for them he made things worst! So,I ask what was the point of this movie? To elevate a deluded murderer to the status of a hero? This movie has nothing to do with the birthing of a nation. In fact, it is nothing but a story of a nut who committed terrible acts of mass murder under the influence of his delusions.

Oh dear lawd what did I just witness? The idea was sound, the execution was sad. I'm embarrassed for everyone involved. This should have been handled better.

Will they Ever make a Movie about John Brown a northern white preacher That got his church and did the same thing door to door to free slaves? with guns... no lol Why? the guilt of the idea of it being called ''glorification'' is too great a risk, Over the the beniefit of ''not all the same'' they put on themselves. even if was a very small %..especially after they see a movie like this. but we got manga about it, its historic truth look it up...i dont want any people to feel bad anymore. theres heroes everywhere.

Slavery sucks and it is and was wrong. People should be aware of the unfortunate souls who suffered from it, if for no other reason than it might motivate people to strive to put an end to it in modern times. What none of these movies tell you, however, is that there is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to slavery. Also, slavery didn't originate in America like people would like you to believe. In fact, about 4% of people owned slaves in America. Also, black people didn't free themselves. Millions of whites stood with them in the fight for freedom. To leave out details like that seems dishonest. I don't think this movie was made to remember the slaves or bring awareness. I think it was made to further divide us as human beings.

Yeah...I dunno, there's something in american slavery movies that disinterest me. Every movie I've seen surrounding this subject since Roots just seems like it's losing ground in validity and emotional value. Sad-- but at the end of the day _ I would have preferred reading the novel. The longer it takes for black-exploitation films to stop hitting the market the longer it will take black americans to stop feeling sorry for themselves-- cause god knows the rest of the world does. __J

25-35~ millions slaves today, more than ever exponentially. Patriot movies such as this are inspiring to me. Those oppressed using the same opportunity as their oppressors to vindicate the whole is thoughtful; ying vs yang; good vs bad. My only qualm with movies like this is that it perpetuates racism & blind faith of rhetoric to the masses. Emotional homosapiens will always if not; treated or shall we all win Darwin's awards, become advocates of give and take while they teeter their consciousness of selfishness/selflessness & their place in between. However, It's never been so cut and dry as perception is obscure.

The social justice warriors will attack any negative comment and call you racist, but do they support rape culture? This movie is creepy , serves the Soros purpose of inflaming black v white tensions on purpose and at critical times (election). From the sister of rape victim who killed herself because of these guys; "This is fiction. I find it creepy and perverse that Parker and Celestin would put a fictional rape at the center of their film, and that Parker would portray himself as a hero avenging that rape''

This movie got released to theaters at one of the worst times. when racial tensions are quite high. and after the remake of Roots. it was too much at the time, hopefully it will do better on dvd. as far as the movie it was ok. but not really the true account of history. For a good alternative to this movie i recommend watching the double feature. Mandingo and the sequel Drum. While they are fiction, it shows another slave uprising that was a little closer to the truth, especially when during the uprising, they ( the slaves ) killed lots of women and kids. Mandingo also includes a scene of a male slave owner raping his male slave. Most people dont know its, Birth of a nation is also a remake of a 1913 movie.

Boring!!! and I venture to guess that there were few fat slaves. Oh and why would the bad white guys go hand to hand instead of rolling the cannons in and wiping them all out in one shot? Slavery was a shame to those who subscribed to it no doubt. But I have no guilt and there were more white folks who didnt then did. Just like today there are rich people who would do what ever it took to be rich. The practice of getting rich off another persons labor is very much alive. Oh and at least the ending was good lol

Even with all the controversy surrounding the director, the truth is this film is quite plain and boring, I read that it took way too many liberties with historical facts, I also know that this was the one the Academy was trying to push to obliterate the stigma of #OscarSoWhite but I hope they stay Faaaar away from it because this is a cinematic footnote on the history of the many movies about the subject and it's poorly directed. 5/10

@warensamble, Same goes for much of the U.S. through media, political party does not matter much here any more, the illusion of it mattering is what counts. The U.S. is mostly filled with what I like to call "Sheeple" with their eyes wide shut. It is a shame.

Really well done film. Saw it in the theater and was actually surprised at how good it was. Reviews have been very mixed so I kept waiting for the movie to get bad but it stayed extremely consistent throughout. Truly impressive debut by Nate Parker.
