RKO 281: Coming to Hollywood as a celebrated boy genius featuring a spectacular career arc in New York including his "War of the Worlds" radio hoax, Orson Welles is stymied on the subject for his first film. After a dinner party at Hearst Castle, during which he has a verbal altercation with Hearst, Welles decides to do a movie about Hearst. It takes him some time to convince co-writer Herman Mankiewicz and the studio, but Welles eventually gets the script and the green light, keeping the subject very hush-hush with the press. When a rough cut is screened, Hearst gets wind of the movie's theme and begins a campaign to see that it is not only never publicly screened, but destroyed.

RKO 281 is a testament to whistleblowers everywhere. In this case, Orson Welles, wonder boy of the hysteria created by his War of the Worlds, takes on William Hearst. During the late 1930's, Hearst owned most of the American news publishing houses. However, Hearst himself was renowned for his parties at his "Castle" in San Simeon with all the Hollywood stars of the era. Since he didn't want to go to Hollywood, he paid for it to come to him and his mistress, Marion Davies, an actress half his age. The story of the film Citizen Kane, and how it nearly was never seen is as interesting as the precarious times right before WWII. The juxtaposition of the terror of Hitler coursing through Europe unopposed and the power of the Hearst press in swaying public opinion is not lost on the viewer.3/5
