I like this show very much, was inspired to read the book: Shopping ,Seduction and Mr Selfridge. Quite interesting, I had no idea how much influence Gordon Selfridge had and still has on the way we shop now.

I like the show.. I watch it and am addicted to it. BUT there is something about it that does not have the ability to transport me to that time era. May be the dialect, or ALL THE MAKEUP on women -_- How Ironic :D

I love this show and, frankly, I cannot understand how someone could possibly 'hate' it. But, cheerio along. Your comment has been noted. :)

Hate Mr. Selfridge? How can you? Its such a harmless enjoyable romp. Its not the best series I ever saw but I enjoy it greatly and in many ways think its less cheesy then its sister show Downton Abbey (Falcon Crest with an English accent). Jeremy Piven is excellent though not as excellent as the supporting cast. Hate it? No way. The opening theme music is worth the price of admission alone. 4/5

I like the show but a lot of the language sounds just a little too modern. It doesn't stick to the vernacular of shows like Copper and Ripper Street.

I quite like it, but yes its not top echelon British Drama at its best and yes Paradise is better but I think its still worth a 6.5-7/10. For all you period drama liking folk such as myself you might see something you like on my fav British PD playlist..I've got one for British PD Films as well. Enjoy!

For all the money they have obviously poured into this production, it lacks pathos! Piven is wooden and his character lacks the ability to pull me in so I care whether he succeeds or not. The writers need to develop his character so he has more depth. I might watch episode 2, but I doubt it.

Take away smiling, waving arms, squinting and posturing, and 90% of Piven's performance is gone. He's either drunk (when he's talking to his son and wife at bedtime) or incredibly limited as an actor. The supporting cast is excellent and sets are lavishly detailed. Piven comes across as having dressed up and memorized his lines, but never rehearsed. It's sad that the weakest link is front and center.

Does anyone else think that Piven is just playing Ari Gold but in the U.K in the 1920's?

I love shows like this but forced myself to watch three episodes of it...hoping it would grow on me but it didn't and cannot believe how Piven, just one man, completely ruins the whole thing, he comes off like some cheesy used car salesman and is so over acting...and over acting a larger than life personality takes a lot of ...something

The show itself has so much potential, but the lead - Mr. Selfridge - ruins it for me. Poor acting discredits the story. I prefer Paradise to this series.

Just read that this show debuted in Britain with the biggest audience ever 7.6 million, and the numbers fell to under 2 million by the second and third weeks.

Watched the first four episodes and really tried to like this show. Then I thought I'd give the first episode of the second season a shot, to see if I felt differently. + + + It is handsomely produced and the supporting cast (even the bit players) are excellent; but I just can't get around Piven. + + + I know a lot about Selfridge, how grandiose he was and his giant personality, but Piven's "Hollywood teeth" and his character's non-existence when off camera pale miserably by comparison. Selfridge was from Wisconsin, not Los Angeles. Every other actor on the show outshines Piven and his inability to evoke the period. There isn't even a faint physical resemblance -- Piven might as well be cast to portray Charles Lindburgh.

Miscast - My objection isn't Jeremy Piven (although he is a cheesy actor) it's how poorly they cast the role of the son. Both parents are American. The family lived in America until the son was maybe 10 years old. Then traveled back and forth between Chicago and London. With most of his life spent in Chicago how did they end up with a kid with a perfect ENGLISH accent?

This is an extraordinary series. A strong season with very well written plot twists. As a period drama it is one of the most enjoyable I have seen. 5/5 for the season. I am looking forward to season 2.

Piven lacks the oomph necessary to lead the show, which makes him superficial and boring. The supporting cast, on the other hand, is what keeps me from turning away completely from this show. Scenery and time accuracy is also very good. I can't stand Ellen Love as a character but that's just a personal opinion.

I agree it is very similar to Paradise which I enjoyed watching the plots unfold. This show has potential to be good once the writers develop the characters and story line.

Black Mama: I totally agree about Piven's Selfridge having no life off screen. One never wonders where he came from or where he goes. He walks on and then walks off. I can't get around the fact that he always sounds like he's reading lines. I gave up after two episodes.

I can't help but compare this show to The Paradise (description: The story of a young girl who works in a department store and gets caught up in the charms of the modern world. ) The Paradise is from 2012, so not that long ago.. They're both British shows set in the early 20th century about the owners and people working in a department store.. Imo, Paradise is much better, if you haven't yet, give it a try. That being said, i will keep watching Mr.Selfridge until i get bored with it.

The show starts off throwing a lot at you, but quickly find it's feat and gets better as the season goes on; where it finishes very strongly
