The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: Destroyed in a dramatic and highly-publicized implosion, the Pruitt-Igoe public housing complex has become a widespread symbol of failure amongst architects, politicians and policy makers. The Pruitt-Igoe Myth explores the social, economic and legislative issues that led to the decline of conventional public housing in America, and the city centers in which they resided, while tracing the personal and poignant narratives of several of the project's residents. In the post-War years, the American city changed in ways that made it unrecognizable from a generation earlier, privileging some and leaving others in its wake. The next time the city changes, remember Pruitt-Igoe.

Very interesting doc. Just shows you how rascism affected the decisions made in the 50's & 60's. To force the Fathers out of the home!! Its a wonder how we as a country have even made it this far. My only ability to pay back for what my previous "white" generations have caused is to make sure my children aren't a part of the problem anymore.

Excellent documentary -- shows some of the many, many factors that lead to a neighborhood's (and city's) collapse. Although it deals with St. Louis, it could apply to many other cities that went through "urban renewal." If you've ever walked or driven by a housing project that has seen better days and wondered "how could a place like that get that way?" this will help answer that question.

America always does this. They simply don't learn from the mistake of others in this case the USSR! We all basically lived in public housing, miserable buildings lacking basic amenities for survival such as heating during the winters. Go visit Poland, Russia, Ukraine and all other eastern block countries, every city block by block by block is still full of these relics of a once horrible and desolate reality. Now why would Chicago and America want to copy that???
