Prince A Purple Reign: his insanely prolific career, Prince Rogers Nelson has released no less than 30 solo albums. By contrast, heís given so few public interviews that all throughout this documentary youíll sit up and strain to hear every word each time he opens his mouth and speaks. Which, I should warn you, is almost never. Advertisement >> On his very first TV appearance on American Bandstand which is shown here, heís stuck dumb by stage-fright so that he canít even answer the simplest question about how many instruments he plays. But when you do catch the odd utterance Ė for instance when heís giving notes to his band, or producing one of his idols, Mavis Staples, itís a shock to hear what a deep voice he has compared to the one we know from his records. Time and again during this hour-long documentary, narrated by Radio Oneís Trevor Nelson (no relation) itís genuinely quite shocking to be reminded of how much creative genius there is crammed inside this one, not especially large human being. Songwriter, musician, instrumentalist, lyricist, producer, dancer and wearer of trench-coats and bikinis Ė no other artist comes close. In the absence of any insights from the man himself, former band members and friends tell the story of his career, backed up by an almost embarrassing wealth of clips from his pop videos and electrifying live performances. An hour simply isnít long enough.

I remember the first time I saw Prince was on American Bandstand...I was truly amazed by rareness of this guy. I never really paid too much attention to his shyness in the beginning....just capture by his pure genius and original talent. I really enjoyed the crossover music style thing that was going on at this time. Because doing this time, I was listening to R&B,Hardrock,Punk, and New Wave...now brand new funky-rock style kinda music. Roger "Prince" Nelson is creative genius...Instrumentalist, lyricist, musician, producer and dancer. His music, shedded light to subject matter...not many musician would dare! He will always be one of my favorite geniuses. Besides, no one can wear a trench-coats and bikinis like that ... pure creativity and sexxy!!

Yes the purple rain movie was as awesome as the song,it touched feeling that came out in body language and has a hard spirit of energy.this is a so,so documentary due to he does not do any documenting, which as usual for him is the way he does things, but i believe one day he will spell his life out for those who don't understand what is going through his mind in music and movement and style,by then it will be too late but it will be the way he wants his history of a legendary icon of art to be,like many others he will be at the utmost in the want of him after life

He is very misunderstood I think he is a musical genius way ahead of his time which in fact has hurt his carrier but stands by his music which I respect and admire I remember being a young D.J. in clubs 800+ In the 80's and when he hit the scene he knocked Micheal Jackson right off his thrown. He gave club dancers and Disc jockey's something new and fun to play and watch the crowds reactions to his music it would be nice to hear his own words on himself before he is gone from this world but things unsaid might be better and the mystery to remain.

does anyone know is Kevin Smith had anything to do with this documentary? I ask because on Smiths DVD(an evening with kevin smith) he talked about shooting a documentary style film for Prince. However he went on to say that the film would never see the light of day due to Princes loss of interest in the project. So I doubt this is that movie, but if anyone knows please post a reply.
