Toast: Wolverhampton,1967:- nine year old Nigel Slater loves his mother though she is a hopeless cook, her finest offering being toast whilst he has great culinary aspirations. When she dies of asthma Nigel is left with a distant father but worse is to come when the 'common' Mrs. Joan Potter arrives as the Slaters' cleaner. Nigel fears, rightly, that her aim is to be the next Mrs. Slater and soon he has a new stepmother and is whisked away to the country. Joan is,however,a superb cook but this only makes for rivalry as Nigel, the only boy in his cookery class at secondary school, competes with her to find the way to his father's heart. A weekend job in a pub kitchen introduces Nigel to an older boy, another great cook and gay like himself ,who gives him the confidence and inspiration to leave home after his father's death and head for the hotel kitchens of London.

I wasn't really sure what to make of this movie just from reading the synopsis, but figured I'd give it a chance, and I'm glad I did. There's nothing overly special about it as there's no great adventure or anything of that sort, just a slice of everyday life portrayed by brilliant acting. Great movie if you just want a nice relaxing night watching great movies.

UMM! If you are on a diet do not watch this movie! The food in it is amazing!!! I am also a huge Freddy fan since I first saw him in Its a Good Year! Toast is a warm and fun walk down memory lane if you were a kid in the 60's

knowing that this is based on a true story makes me even sadder. don't know why. it was such a great movie. i give it a 10/10. great acting, great story line, awesome ending. the movie keeps you going. it actually made me cry, which is a thing i never to in a movie without animals.

First of all, I would have biatch slapped the old man for calling his son such horrible names, then I would have gutted the hired wench and fed her to the dogs. Just sayin. 8/10

A good movie, I liked it. Old fashioned cooking! Charming 60s look and atmosphere. The story and acting were good, although Helena Bonham Carter could do better. I give this movie an 8/10.

It takes 39 min for Helena Bonham Carter to appear and steal the film! Many wonderful Dusty Spriengfield songs too! "If You Go Away" (English version of "Ne Me Quittes Pas") is particularly gorgeous!
