Toast: Wolverhampton,1967:- nine year old Nigel Slater loves his mother though she is a hopeless cook, her finest offering being toast whilst he has great culinary aspirations. When she dies of asthma Nigel is left with a distant father but worse is to come when the 'common' Mrs. Joan Potter arrives as the Slaters' cleaner. Nigel fears, rightly, that her aim is to be the next Mrs. Slater and soon he has a new stepmother and is whisked away to the country. Joan is,however,a superb cook but this only makes for rivalry as Nigel, the only boy in his cookery class at secondary school, competes with her to find the way to his father's heart. A weekend job in a pub kitchen introduces Nigel to an older boy, another great cook and gay like himself ,who gives him the confidence and inspiration to leave home after his father's death and head for the hotel kitchens of London.

Not a movie I will be recommending to anyone. It was slow, the acting was ok and a predictable and boring ending. If this is a true story than I feel very sorry for the people.

UMM! If you are on a diet do not watch this movie! The food in it is amazing!!! I am also a huge Freddy fan since I first saw him in Its a Good Year! Toast is a warm and fun walk down memory lane if you were a kid in the 60's

good movie, great acting.especially the school kids of whom i would have liked to see some more. i think i will now remember the name of helena bonham which is one of the most talented and charismatic actresses out there. a simple film with interesting social constellations here and there, but its the overall package that makes this one special

Surprisingly good little film! I, too, was intrigued by the poster for the movie and I love Helena Bonham Carter's acting, so I gave it a shot...glad I did.

The way Mrs. Potter was portrayed is a disgrace, and that the BBC cooperated and turned his version into something where good actors contributed is even worse. Nigel Slater is a huge, whiny cunt. Read the real story here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1345405/Nigel-Slaters-stepsisters-accuse-food-writer-cruel-lies-mother-seeing-BBCs-Toast.html

I wasn't really sure what to make of this movie just from reading the synopsis, but figured I'd give it a chance, and I'm glad I did. There's nothing overly special about it as there's no great adventure or anything of that sort, just a slice of everyday life portrayed by brilliant acting. Great movie if you just want a nice relaxing night watching great movies.

First of all, I would have biatch slapped the old man for calling his son such horrible names, then I would have gutted the hired wench and fed her to the dogs. Just sayin. 8/10

A good movie, I liked it. Old fashioned cooking! Charming 60s look and atmosphere. The story and acting were good, although Helena Bonham Carter could do better. I give this movie an 8/10.
