Just Imagine: New York, 1980: airplanes have replaced cars, numbers have replaced names, pills have replaced food, government-arranged marriages have replaced love, and test tube babies have replaced ... well, you get the idea. Scientists revive a man struck by lightning in 1930; he is rechristened "Single O". He is befriended by J-21, who can't marry the girl of his dreams because he isn't "distinguished" enough -- until he is chosen for a 4-month expedition to Mars by a renegade scientist. The Mars J-21, his friend, and stowaway Single O visit is full of scantily clad women doing Busby Berkeley-style dance numbers and worshiping a fat middle-aged man.

What a freaky little treasure from the earliest days of talkies, chock-full of recycled vaudeville routines! It's silliness within a romantic story, combined with musical and dance numbers to rival Busby Berkley along a little sci-fi thrown in, works on so many levels. This pre-code mash-up addresses a lot of issues: "She ain't the queen, HE is." The acting is the usual 30's corn, but giving them a break for not knowing better, I rate this 5/5.

I so enjoyed this wonderfully shot SciFi/musical from 1930. I remember when I was in 2nd grade (1972) and my teacher asked us to write an essay on what we thought the year 2000 would be like. Well, being the 'Star Trek and The Jetsons' generation, we were all thinking: Hover cars, matter transporters, robot servants, computers, food pills, etc. While some of this has come true, a lot hasn't. (Still waiting on my hover car!!!) This movie is a lovely and (viewing it from the year 2014) naive vision of what 1980 would be like. I have to give the writers kudos for their vision of personal 'airplanes'. They rather reminded me of today's 'Harrier' jets. What really made me smile, however, were the many, veiled, socio-political comments on equal rights and homosexuality. Truly awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed the dance/song numbers. Especially when you consider that this was WAY before the many special effects and computer enhancements we have now. The acting was so awesome! This is one of the early 'talkies', and as such, the acting had a tendency to be very exaggerated. As was the make-up, lol. Production values were superb. The whole movie was just delicious! I really enjoyed this and give it an enthusiastic 5/5 stars. (Added to my 'Before There Was Colour...' playlist.)
