man I hate those fanatics always destroying our way of life! Too bad this kind of things still exist in our world! What sadness me the burning of the library these people hate knowledge! Alexandria was a great city of human knowledge went up in smokes! Hypatia is the real martyr!

A beautiful story about a disappointed love and a woman who devotes her life to science, both are shattered by religious and political plots. Although this film is not flawless, the storyline and the main subject (religious fanaticism) will keep you in suspense. Moreover, the set is amazing.

What an amazing film. To think that once-outlawed Christians, as they grew in numbers and their leaders grew in power, became enemies of knowledge and learning, oppressive and intolerant, and finally self-righteous executioners. Interesting to see how anti-Semitism reaches back in time. One character had an amazing line: "Where would you christians be without Jews? Jesus was a Jew!" Indeed. Although this is a really long film, and at times almost unbearably talky, it is a worthwhile watch. Weisz is fearless and amazing in this role.

Watchable. Good set design and costumes. Sound performances from Rachel Weisz and Oscar Isaac (Orestes). Liberties taken with the historical record, of course, but then the director/screenwriter do seem to have a polemical axe to grind; it's doubtful that Hypatia would have identified herself as an atheist (being a Neoplatonist in all probability), not that the distinction would have mattered to the bloody-minded religious zealots who butchered her. Incidentally, the mercy killing of Hypatia at the hands of her former slave was for dramatic effect alone; contemporary accounts record that she was set upon by a Christian mob and hacked to pieces with shards of broken pottery.

excellent movie!! I really enjoyed seeing the ancients discuss the complexity of our solar system, makes me thankful for the abundance of knowledge we take for granted today.

This movie attempts to depict the Greek philosopher Hypatia in Alexandria, the Hellenistic city founded by Alexander the Great in Egypt. Thus we see a decaying Greco-Egyptian city in the last days of the Roman Empire where the worship of the ancient gods of the Greeks, Romans & Egyptians confronts the new Christian belief. A very interesting movie and quite good in parts.

Just imagine how much further we would be along if it wasn't for those abrahmic followers. The greatest civilizations on earth were pagan and most of the knowledge was destroyed by invading christians

Three factions (Romans, Jews, Christians) all battling against each other. And who suffers the most - the women. Good movie though.

religion is the gun, made to enpower others over others, and definitely to kill, no matter the goodness, the good holding the weapon becomes bad... i love this movie... it reminds me of socrates and how he died with his virtues... grew my confident hate towards religion even more, and the concept of oneness still becomes strong... 10/10

The worst thing is that none of the works of Hypatia have survived

This was absolutely beautiful. I didn't think I'd get so much out of it, and I admit at times it was difficult to continue watching but that is what made is so powerful. Incredible work, especially towards the end.

This movie was SO MUCH BETTER than I expected!! Great historic movie: religious troubles, scientific discoveries, political plots... Loved it, though the ending is really sad
