There's several different cuts of this movie that have been released in one form or another and I've always liked bits of them but none have ever worked for me. I recently found a 'fan-edit' of this movie online which has become my go-to version of the film and I recommend it if you can find it.

There are split opinions on this movie, I know, but personally, I think that it's one of the most visually appealing movies in its genre and, I think, manages to convey the feel, if not the full scope of Frank Herbert's first book in his epic saga. The cast are truly marvellous, the soundtrack good, the costuming, sets and models would be hard pressed to find rivals and even the special effects, although a bit dated and obvious in some parts, still stand up well. I enjoyed this movie when I first saw it many years ago and, after just re-reading the book (for the umpteenth time, although the first time in many years) enjoyed it just as much, perhaps more, than when I first saw it. I adore the rich universe and mythos that Frank Herbert created in this saga and I think that this is a worthy effort at capturing the first book. Is it perfect? No...but you have to admire the obvious sincerity and passion with which it was done. The mini-series done in 2000 may have had more story detail (not always in line with the book) but, by comparison, I found it flat and lacking soul. You can't say that about this movie. This is a valiant effort that may have missed being a masterpiece, but, in my opinion, not by that much. If you love the Dune series, I think you'll understand what I mean.

This is a good movie, but I do agree with some users here, it could have used a method for explaining things to those who have not yet read the books. I was very impressed, delighted and grateful with the technique of allowing each character to 'speak' his thoughts aloud when there was activity and no other dialogue, because the books were written with a lot of background stories and internal dialogue. After all, Herbert had created a setting FAR into the future with unknown civilizations, planets, beliefs/faith, languages, everything so it was vital that the movie be able to explain itself. I do not like it when people compare movies to books as though they were the same, or even similar, medium and I'm not doing a comparison here, but I do think that people would benefit greatly if they were to also read the books and become familiar with the worlds and citizens of Frank Herbert.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. I think I've watched this more than any other movie. My wife is also a huge dune fan. I'm watching Chuck right now and there are funny references now and then about this movie. Great watch. For those born into the newer CG era this might look a little pixelated to you... or maybe allot. Still solid... Definately before it's time.

This is the most epic science fiction film out there. Great casting, especially of the Baron Harkonnen. A very powerful film that sticks fairly close to the novel. This movie is amazing! 5/5

I saw this film when it first came out. However, as an adult, it didn't move me in the same way. To be honest I prefer the updated version. I have only read the first book but I did enjoy it.

A must see for all sci-fi lovers, no excuses. As a reader of all the Dune books, I can say this, "No, the movie is not as good as the novels, however, the film is still a great "ambassador" to sci-fi enthusiasts everywhere". Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

The universe must have the 'spice' to scarf down all the wierd things that are digestable in this time! Great sci-fi book, good movie too. The spice must flow....=)

I have to admit this movie was a little boring, but it was still pretty cool! There weren't very many action scenes until around the end. The acting was fine, and the plot was good. Well worth watching.

Daid Lynch is the best unfortunately this version is cut down to 2 hrs the Directors cut(uncut)version is 192 minutes. This is the best Dune it might not be as close to the book as the 2000 miniseries but the Artistics, acting and Special Affects are totally superior to the miniseries. This movie is listed on hundreds of websites as one of the top 10 Greatest Sci Fi films ever made rightfully so! 5/5

Dune is simply epic. Very well done. This movie has an amazing cast. The actor that played the Baron Harkonnen blew me away. Also, Patrick Stewart as Gurney was great.

Based upon a book of the same name written by Frank Herbert this movie is a classic of lt's time, unfortunately they've tried to fit the entire book into a couple of hours,it should have been made as a trilogy,9/10.

This was a good movie. I thought a lot of the creativity was really interesting, but there definately wasn't a shortage of WTF moments. It definately makes use of "the weirding way", but nonetheless I found it more interesting than a lot of the typical mainstream sort of movies.

I watched it for the first time last night (in which there's thunder struck three house next door :P the power of Dune!!! *burst open my neighbours' roof and fried my modem too*) and I LOVE it. Just watch it all over again and I love it. Waaa~~~ I kept distracted with how beautiful Kyle is (or the hair, or the nose.. dang) but dang this is so good! The focus on humanity in this movie is priceless. The CGI is quite acceptable for me since there wasnt much of it in as technology isn't the main focus of the story (like Star Wars). I love the worm in this than the new ones. Again, all of them were flawless. But I haven't watch 2000's Dune yet but I've seen Children of Dune. Am totally engrossed with this series. It deserved to be a classic.

Excellant film .Its quite shallow in detail of the whole story when compared to the book, which is understandable because if they went into all the details the film would of been about 5 hours long!! Someone should make a series of all the books, now that would be truely epic as the books are.Read the books, you totally won't regret it..... He who controls the spice, controls the universe!!!!!Mawahhhaaaa!!!!

The "Dune Triolgy" a masterpiece in sci-fi writing, The movie? I stopped watching when they started using 1950's spacecraft to ground control communications.
