You know, I rarely rate a sci-fi movie lower than 2 stars, but this one is a one star for me because of execution. By that I mean they murdered a really good concept and killed off any hint of Tarkovsky's classic. I was hoping for the Hollywood treatment, and instead we only got the reality TV treatment. Slow, boring, and melodramatic, and when something finally does happen, you don't care. This is a *much* better story than the script or the director gives it credit for, and it deserves better than this poor excuse for a movie. Use liberally if you need to get to sleep, or if you are trying to convince someone not to watch sci-fi (who has never seen a good sci-fi movie before).

Solaris is a good romantic sci-fi movie that will have you thinking about the "letting go" of someone you love. A very good movie for those that are interested in romance and metaphysical concepts as well as science fiction. 8.5/10

I agree that it is pretty slow but a good concept, worth a 1 time watch but won't be adding this to my playlist.

This is not a remake of Tarkovsky's Solaris, the makers declared that outright, it is simply another telling of the novel, and viewed as such it is interesting. Watch both films, for they are vastly different. I adore the visionary, breath-taking earlier film, but this was good too. It is much more comprehendable (which in itself is useful) and the performances of all the cast are meaty. The style was nothing special though and certainly not a patch on Tarkovsky's aesthetic. As for the essence of both films and the book- a sci-fi which questions our emotional reality and philosophical issues through the medium of love, it is ahead of it's time.. the final frontier is most likely not only technological, but a blending of every realm of experience, including emotions and consciousness.

I am afraid Lem's greatest book got butchered in this one. They completely missed the point. This wasn't meant to be about the main character and his wife only, or mainly for that fact. If you want to see a worthy adaptation watch the acclaimed Tarkovsky's 'Solaris'. Although the author himself had reservations the film proved to be a masterpiece that stands on its own.

Intriguing, enigmatic and ultimately satisfying, though not perfect.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was different, weird (in a good sense), really well done and the acting was brilliant

I liked this movie but Tarkovsky's Russian version was better because it brought a new vision and was ahead of its time , when it came out. This one is not bad given the modernity of the issue to appeal to its audience but i feel it fails in conveying the melancholic gibbrish of ambiguity the 70s version did so naturally. Soderbergh tried a bit too hard to cram the intangebility of understanding into this one. This Solaris of course exploits an issue that strikes a cord with the main stream audience of today as no doudt it was meant to be an artisitic endeavour that got lost between a producer who wanted to show he was not rooted to an americanised cinematographic system and big studios who want to see the big money roll out of anything they green light. What Soderbergh did not get was that Tarkovsky's version was an action movie that ended with an inadverted artistic flavour because the Russians can infuse that involuntarily in their movies. This solaris might be a sincere effort and deserves to be viewed if you are a fan of such genre but sadly it does not stand out as it predecessor did

Steven Soderbergh`s films are very different to each other. i found solaris very deep in story and slow in action and it`s just because soderbergh wanted to be loyal to origenal story.20 years ago i watched Russian version at film school, well that one was even slower . enjoyed it
