The Big Blue : Enzo and Jacques have known each other for a long time. Their friendship started in their childhood days in the Mediterranean. They were not real friends in these days, but there was something they both loved and used to do the whole day long: diving. One day Jacques' father, who was a diver too, died in the Mediterranean sea. After that incident Enzo and Jacques lost contact. After several years, Enzo and Jacques had grown up, Johanna, a young clerk in a security office, has to go to Peru. There she meets Jacques who works for a group of scientists. He dives for some minutes into ice-cold water and the scientists monitor his physical state that is more like a dolphin's than a human's. Johanna can not believe what she sees and gets very interested in Jacques but she's unable to get acquainted with him. Some weeks later, back in her office, she notices a championship for divers that is supposed to take place in Taormina, Italy. In order to see Jacques again she makes up a story so the firm sends her to Italy for business purposes. In Taormina there is also Enzo, the reigning diving world champion. He knows that only Jacques can challenge and probably beat him. This time Johanna and Jacques get closer, but Jacques, being more a dolphin than a man, can not really commit and his rivalry with Enzo pushes both men into dangerous territory...

One of my most favorite films. I'm a big Besson fan. He makes a cameo in this as well, since his parents were prof. divers. Anything with Jean Reno is ok in my book. It also features a young and very handsome Jean Marc Barr. I don't know if both versions are here, but I think the the 160+min Dir cut is better.Soundtrack by Serra is really nice too.

One of my all time favorite movies that I put up there with Close Encounters, 2001 Space Odyssey, Citizen Kane, Color Purple, this movie helped me to regain my love of the sea that I'd become phobic about, and had very little contact with anymore. This movie also made me realize that I wanted to create music to fit the screen. In other words it changed my life. It is long, but this movie is more of a meditation on beauty, love, inner and outer choices and the sea. It's still Luc's best film, and even he admits as to how impactful this movie was to him and all of those involved in the productions of The Big Blue.

It was an ok movie, but it was waaay too long! Jean Reno is awesome as always and really funny. And if you care about looking at a really hot guy (Jacques) diving and making out for 2.5 hours, you will like this!

This is one of my top 3 foreign films of all-time. I actually popped in tonight to put it on my "To Watch" list, as I haven't seen it in awhile. It's a great story, and some of the best filmmaking out there: 10/10.

Okay, this is quite dated now in many respects but still a firm favourite- The wonderful Mediterrenean setting, the bond between the two divers, a great soundtrack, a real gem. Always brings a lump to my throat when Enzo dies...
