Stealing a Nation: This tells a story literally 'hidden from history'. In the 1960s and 70s, British governments, conspiring with American officials, tricked into leaving, then expelled the entire population of the Chagos islands in the Indian Ocean. The aim was to give the principal island of this Crown Colony, Diego Garcia, to the Americans who wanted it as a major military base. Indeed, from Diego Garcia US planes have since bombed Afghanistan and Iraq. The story is told by islanders who were dumped in the slums of Mauritius and in the words of the British officials who left a 'paper trail' of what the International Criminal Court now describes as 'a crime against humanity' .

Yet, despite all this (from this, so called, "documentary" of half truths), The area is a safer and more stable place because of the Americans' protection. Thank God for the sacrifices and the blood of Americans in protecting those that cannot protect themselves.

Is it any wonder that the USA is not liked in so many countries. And shame on the UK for bowing to U.S. pressure instead of looking out British subjects. 8/10

Another black mark in a book with too many pages against the British government for its moral duplicity. Its a good documentary although one sided it's clear these people have been treated unjustly. ***

I remember seeing this on TV years ago, and could not remember the island for the life of me. Thanks to whoever put this link on 10/10.

I went into this subject with interest having read a mention of it in a yachting book and having known a few sailors stationed there. Watching this film I was aware of the insult that the narrator puts to all the viewers as he continually claims that these people in question are "indigenous". They are not. In the opening of this documentary it states that they came from Africa and India, so they are not indigenous by any sense of the word.at 30:45 they tell us that they have been there for two generations and later other numbers are thrown around as figures " late 17th century""four generations" "six generations" and "two hundred years". The question is- does occupation mean ownership? Now England made a terrible mistake in how they treated these people that as I watched this was their fault. To relocate two thousand people for the building of a necessary military base is sometimes necessary and for sure in this coming century we will hear a great deal more of this small island Diego Garcia. Britain should have let these people know that this sacrifice was necessary for the good of the free world and compensated them reasonably, relocating them fairly and by all means educated these people who were without most modern skills if any. That said there is some blame to be laid on the islanders themselves. If you live in squalor for sixty years after being evicted, remaining uneducated and throwing trash in your yard and reproducing without any regard then YOU are responsible for that. We see this same mentality with the Palestinians and you have to wonder if they didn't have this victim cause to fight what would they do?
