Andersonville: Sort of Civil War version of "Schindler's List" looks at the atrocities that occurred in the 1864 prisoner-of-war camp run by the Confederacy in Georgia. The prison originally planned to house 8000, eventually swelled to 33,000 which left little shelter, food or water for the prisoners and unclean conditions.

This was a good movie, but tis' true it's too long. You could chop an hour out and not miss a thing. Worth a watch if you got a lot of time to kill. 7/10

I should mention, I bought this movie when it came out.Sometime afterwards a coworker was hospitalized. He had also read the same Andersonville book. While visiting him one day I told him I owned the movie, he got all excited asked if he could watch it in the hospital. I just had to let him keep it!

This movie makes a good effort in trying to cover what happened during the Civil War in the worst confederate camp in history. In fact it ended up shaping much of how the North looked at the South afterwards. I read the book Andersonville years ago as a teenager, and it brought chills to me then.It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1955.Its author had gotten information from letters and diaries of former prisoners in writing it.I've now seen this four times since it first came out.Though nothing can really show the horrors adequately,it doesn't do a bad job.I just discovered while doing family history one young relative by the name of Andrew F Powell who spent exactly six months in that camp before he died.Only served in the Union Army eight months before being captured.Died before he had a chance to marry even.Whether by dysentery, starvation, being beaten to death by his fellow soldiers, shot by getting too close to the wall, who knows. But it changes things a little bit when you see a movie or read a book about some terrible place, some awful conditions and see some actors trying to re-enact events that happened not too long ago and then you find out,you had some of your very own relatives suffer what they are acting out.So all things considered, even before I learned this, I still liked this movie.Still found the stories compelling and the plot, directing, and script interesting. I hope more of you will give it a chance. And now I can look up Andrew's grave on line and he can know, someone remembers him. 3/5

Valid for highlighting a not well known piece of history, gruelling and provocative from true accounts....up to the trial sequences in which things become unbearably superficial and cartoon like...not a masterpiece but watchable,6/10.

Good production but inaccurate and non giving with facts I didn't care for this movie.

Of course, there is more to the story than just one side. The Union prisons were not any better, and really worse considering resources available to the North. If interested, here is the full story in audio...http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=9708183577
