Eban and Charley: Charley is turning 15. For the past year, since his mother's death, he has lived in Seaside, Oregon, with his stern and unloving father. It's Christmas week when Charley meets Eban, a young-looking 29-year-old teacher from Seattle, home for the holidays to see his parents. They have things in common: both sign (Charley's mother was deaf), both play the guitar, both are gay. As their relationship deepens during walks on the beach, singing, and talk of poetry, we see it from their point of view and also from the points of view of both of their fathers. Charley's loneliness gives way to happiness when he's with Eban. But what of this grown man?

I got the opportunity to watch this in NY in the only 1 theatre they were showing it at. It was it's premiere and was a long time ago. I've watched it again and it seemed different to me now. There's a fine line crossed here. A taboo that not many people talk about but always are the first to judge. Charleys' character is brighter than anyone thinks. And he has the right to choose who he does want to be with. In the way he expresses himself at times may seem naïve. But in all reality, doesn't he have the right to choose who he wants? Yes at that age you think he's a child and doesn't know right from wrong. But in all seriousness, that's when he starts his realization of what that feeling is. Is it a good thing? One might wonder. But you can't deprive him of his feelings. And like he told his dad, he can't tell him who he can or cannot love. The fact that Eban was not the first to establish physical contact goes a long way in the story. Though yes he was the first to initiate a word or two and then come back for more. But that doesn't mean he didn't have the right to feel the way he did either. In a sense his mother was right. But sometimes things happen. And 9 out of 10 times the person falls in love without even knowing. I think the most disturbing thing of the movie is the way Charley is treated by his father. Yet no one says anything about that. And he's not criticized. He's a disgrace to human kind. You don't do that to your own children! Great watch.

Very nice movie. Really addresses the issue of love and age. I do believe that love is ageless... however, dude was still a minor. At most, a maintain a friendship until he as 18 (or 17 depending on the law). Don't break the law.. ya gotta have some standards and limits.

Just a bit of facts on this film thanks to IMDB, This was the first film Written by James Bolton and other than a short film the first movie he ever directed. The estimated budget was 30,000 and the movie brought in $26,114 (USA) (27 January 2002), $4,094 of that on opening weekend and on 1 screen. The reason why I bring all this up is because the film comes off as being very much a high school class project. As other commenters have noted the sound quality, mixing, editing is terrible. If you can get past the downfalls than it's not that bad of a film. It very much follows the "well if I'm old enough to die in a war, I should be old enough to drink" except in this case it's "If I'm old enough to fall in love, then I should be old enough for everything that comes with it". Just incase anyone was wondering, the legal age of consent for the state is 18, although there is a 3 year "Romeo and Juliet clause". Overall, if you can get past the poor audio and other amateurishness of the film then it's worth a watch, but not much more than that. Few films tend to tackle this storyline, so it atleast gets credit for that.

The sound fx in this movie were horrible. Weird baby music boxes, toy spinners, and random bird noises... who's the target audience again?

Couldn't get into it, the acting wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. Also it seems like this was the directors first film. The filming was kinda sloppy and amateur...
