Song of the South is a 1946 American live-action/animated musical film produced by Walt Disney, based on the Uncle Remus stories. It was Disney's first feature film using live actors. The film depicts the character Uncle Remus, a former slave, cheerfully relating to several children, including the film's protagonist, the folk tales of the adventures of anthropomorphic Br'er Rabbit and his friends. The film's song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Song, is frequently used as part of Disney's montage themes, and has become widely used in popular culture. The film inspired the Disney theme park attraction Splash Mountain.----- The film's depiction of black former slaves, and of race relations in Reconstruction-Era Georgia, has been controversial since its original release, with a number of critics — at the time of its release and in later decades — describing it as racist. Consequently it has never been released in its entirety on home video in the United States and is not shown in theaters.

A truly wonderful and innocent film when the world was alot more clearer and less worried about what people thought. It was a good movie and thats it.

The depiction of blacks in current cinema is a lot more shameful and offensive than anything in Song of the South. By making it unavailable, Disney is doing a disservice to those involved in the film and, more importantly, to the millions who harbor fond memories of it.

LOVE THIS! This is the first movie I saw in the theater. Been looking for it forever! Disney won't re-release it, and I see why, but I still love it!

Disney has chosen not to release this film for good reason.--- For the most part the animated sections are very endearing and free of racism but the rest of the film is certainly not.--- I can't believe how people can't see that this is racist. Probably because they are at least somewhat racists themselves even if they don't realize it.----- The film portrays slavery in an almost positive light, which is an obvious rewriting of history and an injustice.----- It also depicts black people as mostly unintelligent lick-spittles who desire nothing more than to serve their masters well and who are endearingly stupid and jolly.---- Black slaves sometimes acted like that as a disguise to help protect them from their enslavers' hatred and wrath, not because they actually were like that. It was an act they put on out of necessity for survival.----- The film perpetuates the racist archetype of the "magical n*gger". If you don't know what that is or why it is a bad ting to perpetuate you should google it.----- I somehow managed to see this film as a child when I was very young, I think in Disney World itself, and I honestly feel that it gave me a biased view of black people for the first few years of my life. It is a film that can very powerfully affect children.---- I would have thought that most adults could watch it and see it for its shortcomings without being negatively influenced by it in their attitudes but after reading some of the above comments I am not too sure about that anymore.----- There is no doubt that this is NOT a film that should be viewed by children and that is probably why Disney doesn't release it except for academic study...thank God.

This is a very good movie. In all honesty I think that if James Baskett (Uncle Remus) felt in any way this movie was racist then he would have never accepted the role (just my opinion). And he was so wonderful as the story-teller Uncle Remus! Uncle Remus is really is a wholesome character, with good morals and a wonderful teacher. Segregation was alive and well during the time of this film - and what is so good about the film - it shows how people of different races and backgrounds can come together. There *might be* an underlying and deeper message to this film - we can desegregate ourselves and live in peace with one another. On a lighter note - there is a fun yet meaningful cartoon withing the live-action picture. Plus this film contains one of Disney's most popular and famous songs 'Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" 8/10

this is pretty good I don't know why people said it promoted racism to me it showed a wise elder using story telling to help a youngster deal with things in his life that were hurting him inside

One of the most uplifting films I have ever seen. If Disney ever re-released it to DVD I would certainly be one of the first in the queue to buy it. I am going to be singing Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah all day now.

Fantastic Movie! I haven't seen it since I was a kid. Wonderful moral lessons. Brings in slavery. Something The U.S. is not proud of .but should not be forgotten.

Those who hate this wonderful Disney Film are further the spread of racism. Get over it, slavery din't start with the importing of Blacks by Whites. Check your history and read about the "Barbary Slave Trade". no apoligies needed or expected. Just understand it was in the beginnings of a nation we all call home now. We need to love and respect one another as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has instructed us to.......

It looks so fun to be a slave, all that singing and story telling. Ahh, the good ole days.

Love this movie. It depicts a time in America's history that should never be forgotten, like the atrocities committed against other races and cultures. Don't dwell on the past, especially when you can hold your head high knowing that the people who were bought as slaves are now the same people running the country! =)

It nice movie but it really a shock that is so...well racist. that is not a good thing for a movie. But they could do without being so rude to the colored people in there but sadly that was the time they did what is totally sad.
