Outstanding movie, exceeded my expectations, another Clint Eastwood masterpiece and closely resembles another Eastwood directed film Letters from Iwo Jima which if you haven't seen you definitely should!!!

A very good adaptation of the book. Also a very good explanation of the psyche of the men who were there. As a soldier myself I look to movies more like this than like "Black Hawk Down" ( which IS a great movie) or "Patton" which more or less glorify the image of a soldier or marine. We don't do it for fame, and we're sure as hell not the heroes, we do it for the guy to our right and the guy to our left, and for the ones back at home who can't fight for themselves. This movie was a prime example of that mindset. 5/5

A beautiful, heartwrenching, emotional film...very well directed, very good acting, outstanding visual effects. Musical score was excellent, as was the 'color scheme' Eastwood chose to use, it made it more realistic. This is a must watch... 10/10

A meticulously constructed war film that addresses the consequences of violence. More mature and challenging than Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan

One of the best, and one of my personal favorite war films of all time! I thought Letters from Iwo Jima may have been slightly better, but this was still brilliant. Amazing performances, very emotional movie. It's a must see for sure!

Sorry, I got carried away. Brilliant Eastwood direction and collaboration in production with Spielberg. Probably Adam Beach's finest role as Ira Hayes who was, until his death at 32, haunted by images of injustice and war. Outstanding acting all around, a great war film, I'm surprised I've never seen it. It bogs down a few times in narrating the obvious and the occasional jump to the elderly survivors but it doesn't detract terribly from the film. Seems to focus on the humanity vs. the inhumanity of war as well as "heroism" showing it is ALWAYS in the eye of the beholder, those who need something to cling to in times of darkness. Eastwood's cynacism is abundantly clear through out the picture with his adroit condemnation of the commercialization in "selling" war to the homeland. It was a courageous statement for the film makers but I'm not sure all the viewers understood it. Interestingly, the flag controversy is 100% true. Hayes was the only one who stood up for Harlon Block and was ordered to keep his mouth shut. Later when the Marines investigated after Hayes visited the Blocks with the truth, the cowardly lt. colonel claimed Hayes never mentioned Block's name to him. The REAL flag, the "too small" flag 54" x 28" was raised by Lt. Harold Schrier, Sergeant Ernest Thomas, Cpl. Charles W. Lindberg, Pfc. James Michels, Pfc. Raymond Jacobs, Pvt. Phil Ward, Navy corpsman John Bradley and Sergeant Oliver "Hank" Hansen none of whom received credit because they were not "commercialized" by a photo op. The original photos were taken by Sgt. Louis R. Lowery for Marine magazine Leatherneck and not widely circulated. However, true heroes know their truth without praise or recognition. They know their fear, darkness and that feeling of being alone in a task that must be done without thought of praise or glory. NONE of us can sit in judgement or praise of our warriors until we have stared at 20,000 guns all with one goal - to kill you... and your goal to kill 20,000 fellow humans that you don't even know, all with wives, children, mothers, fathers, siblings. I cannot even imagine how horrifying, how daunting that tiny rock in the Pacific must have looked to them even before they landed. Honor and patriotism are all lovely concepts, excellent motivators and necessary when we are under attack as a nation. Unfortunately, I believe that cowardice is as natural to some as is honor. Both in their own way are encoded in our DNA, the instinct to survive. Is the sacrifice of a generation worth it? Was it then? We knew of the Pearl Harbor attack before it happened but did nothing to stop it, why? Is it now? On soil that is not our own? Big big questions. This movie makes you grateful and thoughtful all at once and overwhelmingly proud and sad. God bless our warriors past and present.

The book, and consequently the movie, center on 'Doc' and the others photographed in the famous photo of Iwo Jima that re-inspired America during WWII. Truthful and accurate adaptation of events.
