What I love about this movie is how the 2 main characters deviate from their stereo-types. 1 - A teenage black male from NYC public housing, who's a writer first and a basket-ball star second. 2 - A reclusive elderly white male who's one of the greatest novelest of his time but has no desire for fame or reverance (of course this is an allusion to JD Salinger). All to often we try to divide our society through simple check boxes (race, socio-economic status, age, etc). Individuals are much more complex than aggregated labels ascribed to them.

Powerful movie with a strong message. Sean Connery shines.

this is a goody. I bet a lot of authors feel this way, that people say hteir books are full of metaphor when they are just a normal story, Like The X-Men. they were just normal heroes then people said it was symbolic of racism, even Stan Lee said it is not a metaphor for racism.

This is an amazing under rated movie. As un-manly as it sounds, the ending brings a tear to my eye every time. I think everyone should watch this at least once.

This is a forever classic. Movies like that one are not just for entertainment but rather for a knowledge.

as a writer this is a fun movie to watch. We are a strange bunch and sometimes it does take another writer to understand us. Of course we will often deny this to the world but it doesn't make it any less true. I was glad to see it not jump on the bandwagon of racial romance and try to make some sort of 'statement' there. This is a very basic formula story that they managed to make reasonably original. The 'diamond-in-the-rough-until-someone finds-them'-formula. Still works. Loved it. 8/10
