Incredible movie. Beautiful from beginning to end. Heartbreaking. An instance where the film version of a book shows a deeper understanding than the book itself.

This is one of Elizabeth Taylors best movie. Her and Monty Cliff make a beautiful couple. You really want them to have a happy ending. Didn't like Shelly Winters character. It was hard to understand why Montys character would go for her. She was so needy. I think her character should have had more depth.

Most films place the viewers in the position where they immediately empathize or view the film from the perspective of the Protagonist, this film was no exception. I was able to view this film from Clifts character's perspective because I think that is how it was meant to be watched. Immediately we sympathize with Clift's circumstances and we are glad when his circumstances begin to improve. For me, eventually, I could not however sympathize too much with Clift any more because I kept thinking, he could have helped her but he didn't and we all know why. Although I think the dilemma he was in was relateable in regards to Elizabeth Taylor's character being the life he wanted and Shelley Winters being the life he had and thought is all he could ever get. I couldn't help but have my sympathy shift and go entirely onto Winters' character because she was there for him when he didn't have anything, and I could tell she really loved him. This is one of those movies that I don't know, maybe because of the type of person that I am, it struck a cord within me and made me think, man what would I have done in a circumstance like Clifts? What would anybody do if they were in his shoes? This movie was a bit heartbreaking to me all around for every single one of the lead characters. I was able to regain my initial sympathy for Clifts character at the end. This had me drawn into it the entire time. Excellent classic.

It was mentioned that someone found it hard to understand why Monty's char woulda went for Shelly's char... it's simple. At the beginning it was shown to us how alone and out of place Monty's char was feeling, and was for some time. To run into a familiar face at the movie theater was a new 'familiar' thing in a world where everything was confusing and he was alone. She reacted favorably to him so he was on that like a moth to a flame. Then things started to change he was less needy and more focused and comfortable with things (where he was, what/who he wanted) and was finally being recognized and acknowledged. It's classic of everyday people who feel the same way, end up with people maybe they shouldnt be with. Then as they change, the people in their lives change.

I guess I expected more from this film then what I got... I think I had my hopes up just a little too high... I'll be honest and give it a 3/5
