Kieslowski uses the French flag as the inspiration for the trilogy, with the colours blue, white, and red standing in for the revolutionary principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity. The three films are also interpreted respectively as an anti-tragedy, an anti-comedy, and an anti-romance (BBC). Red is a mystery of chance, coincidences, and connections. Fate, stubbornly refuses to allow paths to cross. The themes here are of hidden secrets and hidden truths. The unlikely combination of the model and the retired judge allows us to look at a very strange relationship, one which revolves around spying on the lives of others from a distance while tip-toeing around their own lives. The model Valentine is used to being watched, but is not particularly adept at watching; at first appalled, eventually plays along. The conclusion brings together characters from all three films while the bill-board poster of Valentine takes on a double meaning by the end of the film (just what is that expression on her face saying anyway?). Krzysztof Kieslowski died in 1996 at the peak of his powers as a director. Perhaps he knew it was coming. Perhaps he did it simply because he could: he had said enough, and Red's ending proves it! Although Red is much more critically-acclaimed, I personally enjoyed White and Blue more. Nevertheless, Red's finale is unimaginably POWERFUL!

I watched the trilogy blue, white and then red, it makes sense this way. To me this is all about the women and what they are willing to do for their partner's past, present and future. These women are extraordinary, i suspect this was Krzysztof Kieslowski's opinion of women in general. Personally i agree with him and enjoyed this a great deal.

Awesome!!! This movie is the third installment of the trilogy and it was wonderful although not as good as it's predecessors it tells its own story and wraps up everything quite nicely. I love the magic and connections between these 3 films: Blue, White and Red.
