Superb character driven drama with great acting. A film like this is for mature audiences only as a perquisite for enjoyment is the absence of attention deficiency.

Brilliant, understated performance from Anthony Hopkins, and Emma Thompson was very much his equal in this outstanding Merchant-Ivory production.

An excellent adaptation of the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. A beautiful Merchant-Ivory classic in every way with outstanding performances from Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. Anthony Hopkins truly embodied his character, the role could only belong to him. It is such an emotionally rich and powerful film and the direction is brilliant. Worth a watch... 9/10

I'm not a fan of dramas, or any gratuitously stuffy media which poises itself in a very serious manner, rolling up its sleeves at first introduction, with every intention of manipulating your feelings. Generally, such attempts at emotional manipulation by media (films, in this case) is quite clumsy, and only someone who's a sucker for sentiment gets caught in its melodramatic undertow. The take away is often little more than, "Oh how sad!" Which is neither useful nor original. If anything sedentary is going to take up 2+ hours, it ought to be one or both. Personally, I prefer something educational (ideally), clever, complex, reflecting on something larger than the struggle of a handful of your average fictional character. However, this film did all of these things and more. First of all, there's quite an impressive wealth of art history percolating just beneath the surface, both as elements of the set, and also within the cinematography, i.e. recurring, usually unmentioned, presence of "the chinaman" artifact - the chiaroscuro lighting alluding to biblically -inspired Renaissance paintings, etc. These thoughtful nuances added layers upon layers to the narrative, extending far beyond the dialogue, the obvious actions of characters. The recurrence of objects, the use of lighting, and other subtle visual cues throughout, leave much to be explored with repeat viewings. I thought it sounded pretty boring, to be frank, in spite of knowing that Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins are both pretty fantastic. The trailer did it no justice. The humour is subtle, always contextual, so the trailer would not easily have been able to convey it very effectively. It's quite good, though. Engaging, visually stunning, and dare I say, emotionally riveting.
