I first came across this movie one night while living in Santa Barbara. My ex girlfriend and I were discussing Wes Anderson movies because we had just finished The Royal Tenenbaums and she asked if I'd ever seen The Squid and The Whale. I had never heard of it but I'm a huge fan of Jeff Daniels so I'm always open to watching any film he's involved with. I really enjoyed this movie with all its awkwardly flawed moments. Jeff Daniels as Bernard Berkman exudes this pompous arrogance so perfectly that at times you forget that his attitude is simply shielding his true emotions from the world. I'm really not a big fan of Jesse Eisenberg, I think of all these new actors who represent this fumbling, awkward, quiet, shy, geeky kid generation, Jesse is definitely the worst by far. His character is diverse and educated but at the same time confused, but I just feel like they could've cast better than Eisenberg. Other than that minor flaw, I found the movie to be quite enjoyable and I've watched it a few times since the first time. So I guess that ex wasn't completely useless right?

This film made feel uncomfortable all the way through, partly because of the father's attitude. I don't think I would watch it again.

This was actually really good!! Jesse Eisenburg is incredibly awesome in this. I'm sure he's going to become an exquisite actor. At least I hope he does. Must watch, really fun and heartfelt!! 5/5

It hits the fan very fast, and the dysfunctional layers of this family start to peal one by one from the first 10 minutes, till it gets to the core of the vulnerability of each character. A controlling underachieving know-it father, an independent successful mother, a big brother with deep troubling imposter syndrome that is heavily affected by his father, and young brother who's left out struggling to define himself during his teen transition. The characters are quite complex and the screenplay plays very naturally. 9/10.

Entertaining and insightful. I understand how this will not before everyone, but if you like a good story line than this is it. The only character I could not understand was the little boy (Pickle).. What was up with him?

The young lad is the best character/actor in this film, nice touch to use the Risky Business soundtrack when the focus is on him. For a drama it has really nice comic touches throughout keeping it from getting maudlin but without losing the drama. The story is engaging, the casting is spot on and all performances are stand out. Recommended.

The movie was pretty good, all the characters including the little brother were sinister enough to keep this humorous during something so heavy as finding out your parents aren't the people you think they were when you're old enough. I mean a lot of people could relate to it, but it's not really meant to provoke too many bad feelings there's a nice balance and while people hate on Eisenberg, he does play a good 80's character, if you like it watch him in Adventureland. My favorite character was the little brother, he drank beer and busted a web slinger all over town lol 8/10

this movie had potential but i dont get why everyone says horrible things for no reason and the other people forgive them so easily the little kid calls his mum ugly and makes her cry and shes fine with it and the mum hits her oldest son and in the next scene theyre fine. good sountrack but just a bit pointless 4.5/10

I can't understand why so many people liked this film. It takes a similar theme from Irreconcilable Differences (A movie from the late 70's or early eighties with Dustin Hoffman). I was annoyed after I watched this movie because I felt I just wasted 90 minutes of my life. It left nothing to talk about. It had no real point except how a divorce affects children, but we did not get to know the characters of this movie well enough to understand them because they stayed one dimensional throughout. It had the same kind of story line as Seinfeld. After you see it, you won't remember it two weeks later.
