Hype: The world of grunge. This documentary examines the Seattle scene as it became the focus of a merging of punk rock, heavy metal, and innovation. Building from the grass roots, self-promoted and self-recorded until break-out success of bands like Nirvana brought the record industry to the Pacific Northwest, a phenomenon was born. More than just an examination of the music, this is a look at how this artistic movement became a societal and fashion trend with a major effect on American culture.

Oh and the GITS used to blow every single one of the bands on this video off the stage, Nirvana included, when they'd play together. Such a fekkin shame. Damn they were good.

Goddamn I gotta dig out my old Seaweed and MudHoney Records... How did they never blow up while we got stuck with frikkin Chris Cornell... Oh well.. My only grip with this doc (which I had the first time I saw it at a Downfall of Western Civilization III/Hype double feature), is that it is told from a condescending view. I mean I understand that the interviews have to be that way, after all that's what that whole scene was all about, but geezus Chistmans, try not to take yourself so seriously. The narrative of the whole documentary is depressing and bland. I'm waiting for the director to turn the camera around and start talking about how he knew all the bands when they were in pre-school making tour shirts with crayons and paste... Get over yourself.

Great doc. Even to this day when I hear the word "grunge" it makes me shiver in anger. Nice to see the bands felt the same way. 4/5

Pretty good film. Enough time has passed now I can enjoy some of the music that came from the "grunge" era without puking all over my flannel shirt! Talk about the exploitation of culture, see 1992. (the year)
