Catherine the Great: In this romanticized biography, a small German principality's unexperienced princess, Catherine, becomes the bride of czarevitch Peter, the mad and abusive son and heir of the Russian czarina Elisabeth, from whom she learns the cynical ropes of wielding absolute imperial power at any cost, including sacrificing her lover, young guards officer Saltykov, who must give her an heir which Peter can't and is then send abroad. After Elisabeth's death, she quickly moves to seize power with military and courtier support and works to enlarge and modernize the empire, again putting statesmanship ahead of her lover, a military genius who defeats the Ottomans and governs the conquered territories for her.

She was a remarkable leader and I love that Catherine Zeta-Jones got to play Catherine the Great. The movie is admittedly a little theatrical but it's great nonetheless!

The finest masterpiece in the corny and trivial traditions of harlequin. Made me laugh by how slappy and grotesque it was! Hip, hip hooray! :D

A decent tale of one of Europe's greatest rulers. It seems that the female rulers have always had the most difficult reigns and at the same time, seem to have built up these empires into their greatest times. In this case, Russia's Golden Era is under the rule of a female empress as was England's Golden Era under Elizabeth. Let us not forget Egypt's rise to power and glory under the reign of the great Hatsepshut, first woman to name herself Pharoah. I think history shows the truth of what women do when given power. Anyway, not a bad film as I was eager to learn more about Catherine The Great after watching the Scarlet Empress. This film covers her actual reign more so than her rise to power. There should likely be an updated version to this. Anyway, if you like films about documented history, give this a whirl. I found that it held my attention. 6/10.
