It is a damn shame the Catholic church and organized religion in general ruined any chance of the rest of the books being made into movies. Just another reason why I don't condone agree or believe in organized religion. If you go against anything they preach you are instantly going to hell and in some cases are sent there by them quite literally by them killing you. I mean really is it not extremely silly to get all worked up over a fantasy world killing a fantasy god it's not like it was based in our world and someone was killing the god the organized religions preach about. With that stated I do believe in god an afterlife heaven and hell but organized religion is a scam to enslave your mind and take your money period.

I don't understand why they wouldn't make the next two films, this movie was so great....they decided to stop production because the first didn't do so well in the box office, probably because of ppl like us that don't pay to watch :( lol

For those of you who keep asking about the sequel(Source Wikipedia): At the time of The Golden Compass' theatrical release, Chris Weitz pledged to "protect [the] integrity" of the prospective sequels by being "much less compromising" in the book-to-film adaptation process.New Line Cinema commissioned Hossein Amini to write a screenplay based on the second book in the trilogy, The Subtle Knife, potentially for release in 2010 or 2011, with the third book of the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass, to follow. However, New Line president Toby Emmerich stressed that production of the second and third films was dependent on the financial success of The Golden Compass. When The Golden Compass did not meet expectations at the United States box office, the likelihood of a sequel was downplayed by New Line. According to studio co-head Michael Lynne, "The jury is still very much out on the movie, and while it's performed very strongly overseas we'll look at it early 2008 and see where we're going with a sequel." In February 2008, Chris Weitz told The Daily Yomiuri, a Japanese newspaper, that he still hoped for the sequels' production: "at first it looked like we were down for the count because in the U.S. [the film] underperformed, but then internationally it performed [better] than expectations. So, a lot depends on Japan, frankly... I think if it does well enough here we'll be in good shape for that". And although producer Deborah Forte had, that March, expressed optimism that the sequels could be made, and that she intended to see them realised, the studio decided against producing them, with The Independent speculating that December and the uncertain economic climate may have contributed to their cancellation. By October 2008, the two planned sequels were officially placed on hold, according to New Line Cinema, because of financial concerns during the global recession. Sam Elliot, however, stated, "The Catholic Church ... lambasted them, and I think it scared New Line off."

To all the people that never read the books, and liked (even dislike) this movie, you should really read the books because (we hear that a lot but in this case it's really true)they are 100000 times better than this movie, which I dislike by the way as I was expecting sp much more from it after having my mind blown by the books! :D

I can't believe it took me almost 6 years to watch this movie, but now that I have I'm glad I did. Never read the books but I can honestly say after seeing this I would love to see the complete story the way it was meant to be told. Sad that there was never a sequel, and having seen the restored ending I much prefer it. This whole story reminded me of one of my all time favorite video games, The Longest Journey.

i hated how they just cutted the ending, just because this "was" supposed to be "children" story. hell no! this is young adult and stuff, the book has real cruel stuff and this is not a bedtime story, they could've keeped the ending. for you others HDM fans, the ending is on youtube. just search golden compass - ending restored

Yeah the book was phenomenally better. The movie really kind of fell flat, and that is why the other two books won't be made into movies. Which is really sad because the other two books are so important to the complete story, which is utterly brilliant. But as beautiful as the movie was, there was just something missing. It felt kind of plain and manufactured. It was definitely made to be the first part of a trilogy, but it was lacking in certain qualities to ever be given a sequel. I know the catholic church protested against these books and the movie, but I would also have to chock it up to the writing and/or direction. It was very one dimensional compared to well made fantasy movies, and certainly compared to the books.

His Dark Materials is by far my favorite trilogy i've ever read. i hate that the other two movies never got made. this movie was disappointing in some ways, i hated that they unnecessarily changed the order of events, and changed character names. but what it does right is very very right!

They absolutely butchered the book. I demand a remake for the adult audience. This isn't a fairy tail.

People that say they love this movie, obviously were not faithful lovers of the trilogy. I own the trilogy and have read them all more then 5 times each. I also own the very rare 4th book. The ending of the movie was cut off and would have needed to be finished BEFORE even going on to the next movie. Never in my life have I been more disappointed about a book to movie. Not because of the movie itself, it wasn't horrible but because it's been 5 years and they have not finished the trilogy. That really disappoints me. I wanted to see Will, Lyra and Wills relationship, when he gets a daemon and how everything about daemons is explained. Sigh sigh sigh. So sad.

Wikipedia: 'No sequels are planned yet. Much publicity was given to Compass actor's Sam Elliott blaming Catholic Church opposition for forcing their cancellation, but UK Guardian film critic Stuart Heritage thinks critical "disappointment" with the first film may have been the real reason.' A shame if this sticks. Religious inclinations didn't stop the Narnia books being made into films, and Golden Compass, in this movie-watchers opinion, is a superior story.

Besides the fact that I had to watch this movie on 4 separate links since they all kept freezing or the sound didn't match up at parts, it was a very good movie. I agree with other commentors though that the ending was terrible since there's no part 2 or anything. It leaves the viewer wanting more and definitely suggests that there will be more.
