Before you watch Robotech, you have to understand something about its impact on pop culture in America. Robotech was like nothing anyone growing up in the '80s had ever seen when it came to animation. Sure, the quality was questionable at times--episodes were uneven in the depth to the animation. And yes, this was dubbed and an amalgamation of three separate Japanese animation series cobbled together by an American producer. But none of that mattered when it came to American kids in 1985. We saw nothing like it before. Remember, cartoons back then were entirely kid friendly and treated its audience like dumb children. Series like GI Joe, He-Man and even Transformers entailed stand-alone episodes that had a neat start and finish with battle scenes in between where lots of destruction was wrought, but no one ever got hurt. Not so when it came to Robotech. The series treated its audience like adults. Despite the implausible scifi theme, were were treated with complex story-telling that didn't give us stand-alone episodes, but a story arch that required you to watch one show after another to keep up with the storyline. And more importantly, unlike the comical American animation counterparts, Robotech did not shy away from the subject of death. We kids never seen anything like that before. I mean, in GI Joe, the good and bad guys managed to dodge the haywire laser fire coming from any direction, and also managed to parachute out of destroyed vehicles just in time. Robotech, on the other hand, treated war like it was--people died. Even major characters were killed during the story, to much emotional affect as well. Robotech stands the test of time, and it's never been given enough credit for prompting an anime revolution in America that continues to this day. And I will credit Robotech for the boon in mature storytelling across all American television today. I believe it was this show that laid the foundation for my generation to not only appreciate, but expect television shows to treat its subject matter with seriousness and respect. I honestly feel that without Robotech, we may never have shows like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and countless other shows where characters--both minor and major--can die before the credits roll, and the storyline will continue on in the next episode. What started out as a gambit from an American producer turned into a true revolution in American television story telling. Long live Robotech!
