severely underrated as it got lost a bit as it aired against the last few seasons of TNG and then against voyager afterwards. had a very solid cast, took chances the previous series' didn't and probably had the best ship in the Defiant. best part of the show is the last 4 seasons with covered the Dominion war which is some of Trek's best, imo. just hang in through a bit of a choppy first season and you won't be disappointed. :)

Some of the things to keep in mind about Deep Space Nine: DS9 had very few cross-over episodes with The Next Generation, so it was more independent from its parent, TNG, than might first be assumed, and only 2 characters from the TNG became regulars. Also, DS9, unlike TNG, doesn't always restore status quo ante at the end of each episode, so story arcs may span several shows or even seasons, and does NOT, in fact, allow for seamless out-of-order viewing. So watching several episodes from each season really won't give you the full impact of how awesome this show can be, especially in the later seasons, when the funding was raised. If you've a Star Trek fan or just a space junkie, DS9 has a lot to offer for good entertainment. I hope you'll enjoy XD.

I'm not going to compare DS9 to the other ST series, make it through season 1 (which isn't that bad anyway!) and you will find DS9 is rather unique and is well worth watching. It stands on it's own and the characters are very good, you eventually feel like part of the crew and get to know everybody ha. Watch it and you will find yourself hooked!

From season 3 onward, I think DS9 had the best story arc of the Treks.

my two cents.....so some hate ds9 some love it. star trek for me is a possible future for mankind and by the looks of it, doesn't get much better. we're always been explorers tos tng so when making ds9, tng was still running and vog was coming so they had to do something different i believe they hit the nail on the head, they carried the ST values incorporating new difficultly in religion, war, and the melting pot of cultures, ive enjoyed all the star treks tng being my fav. however ds9 expresses more then the others could hope....so live long and prosper....and watch ds9.....even the new series enterprise is pretty good if u give it a chance, it really shows the challenges of an emerging space race, good prequel for startrek

I totally ignored DS9 when it came out, but it's by far the best Star Trek series. Goes way beyond the others. There's a complexity to the character development that goes far beyond what is achieved in the other series. Each of the main types of humanoid characters are explored - their psychology, their culture, their socialization - how they flourish or don't in a cosmopolitan place like the space station. Choosing to locate the station next to the most critical strategic asset in the galaxy sector - the wormhole - makes for dozens of episodes rich in politics and military strategy. I wasn't expecting the series to delve into spirituality and religion but the story arcs about Bajor and the intersection of its religion with the inhabitants of the station adds a lot of depth and raise some provocative questions. Bajor is, among many other things, a dramatic allegory that examines Middle Eastern political and religious conflicts, occupation and territorial claims. Watching DS9 now is a look back into a pre-9/11 world - fascinating because if it had been written today the series would look quite different. Even our sci-fi television has become dystopian and dark (Defiance comes to mind). One of the best reasons to watch any Star Trek series is that even the darkest episodes are uplifting and full of hope - this series more than others. The classic corniness is there (holosuite costume drama, time travel to earlier Earth history, throwback episodes with Kirk and Spock) but not in overwhelming doses. DS9 frequently thrills and rarely disappoints.

This was probably the best of the Star Trek shows. I didn't watch The Animated Series, so I can't rank that one.

DS9 is by far my favorite ST. I loved some specific characters from other serials but DS9 has dream crew, quantity or quality vise (Sisco, Odo, Bashir, Kira, O'Brian, Dax, Worf, Qark, Garak...), add Defiant, Cardassians, Klingons and Dominion Wars into mix and result must be awesome ;) I know some people hate Captain Sisko due to his pompous attitude (he certainly was not alike Picard) but its result of his confidence and competence, I personally disliked Jake. P.S. also DS9 opening theme is my favorite of all ST

Whether you like the series or hate it I'm just really glad I'm not the only person still watching it after all these years. Makes me feel a little less like a dork. LOL

I do like the show a lot, but I think it is more because I'm a Star Trek fan in general, than the actual show itself. I have watched the first season, and most of the second season so far, and I am confused as to how a show can have so many episodes that are really good right up until the end, and then fall completely apart... It's almost as if they run out of time and just wrap it up. In some cases, the story never seems to be finished, while in others, the story just comes to an abrupt stop, but very few are good all the way through to the end. I'm hoping as the seasons go on, the writing will improve.

This show is definitely one of my favorite and a must watch for all the trekkies. The dominion is a great vilain far more dangerous than the romulans or the borg in my opinion. Well done !!

Season 1 is a bit slow and dull, but things really warm up by Season 2. Season 2 through 6 have plenty of action but most importantly character development. I think that the more stationary nature of DS9 (mostly taking place on a space station) is more conducive to character development; however, even DS9 had to have a ship up in the mix by introducing the Defiant in Season 3, which made the characters and action more mobile (in addition to runabouts). By Season 7, the plot seemed to start to suffer, but the final story stretch of the series did end it well. As for new characters (so not counting Miles O'Brien or Worf), my favorites were Benjamin Sisko and Kira Nerys.
