Ken Follett's Journey Into the Dark Ages: Part one of two. Ken Follett travels across Europe to examine the impact of the bubonic plague in the 14th century, which arrived in Italy in 1347 and went on to kill tens of millions across the continent. He uncovers the fate of two sisters on an English farm, a priest in Winchester and a doctor in Florence, and explores how Europe underwent a radical transformation as a result of the outbreak.

Follett, author of the wonderful Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, makes a convincing case here for his theory of how the Black Death actually helped Europe step out of the ignorance and repression of the Dark Ages. I'm looking forward to Part 2.
