The unrealistic part about the whole one year thing is the community is just paying for them to go out and get drunk and explore, it's like if we all took one super long holiday. When the reality of it is you work 40 Hours or more in a week and are lucky to have 1-2 days to screw around. Are life isn't really That much different then their's its just a little easier and less Restricted.

That's what I thought. They have a year known as rumspringa to do what ever they want and this is a good thing. It allows them to truly test their faith. Now if they don't come back after the year is up then they can't come back so I was basically confused about this whole episode. 80 percent of them do join the church after the year. They were right about the horrible education though. That is the issue I have with the amish way of life but to each their own. However, because of the poor education I would think it would be almost impossible to leave the community. Not sure how accurate this show is or if it is even real. Viewer beware and maybe talk to an amish person yourself before making judgements.

NY of all places for culture shock. Live in an average apt. or room in a home with a roomate like most people in another town there (and do councelling) without going crazy overboard for some tv show making there $ off of you and paying the way catering to young rebellion going really nuts, albeit understandable to some degree. Keep your dignity. Christianity is free will, not shunning anyway. I've already seen the later show where Iva, Andy, Betsey etc. take off.

This is just as wrong as it can be. TLC had an opportunity to help it viewers do, what it's call letters stand for, and blew it. The Amish presented here, are not Amish, but singles who grew up Amish, and have left the religion already. Rumspringa, a time given to UNBAPTIZED older teens, can be a time of growth within the religion. For the last few years, it has been portrayed on American TV, as a time when these youngsters go hog-wild, experimenting with drugs, sex, and anything that can be thought of, just so the outside world can say, oh, see? this is what happens when one tries to keep a wrap on anyone! These young people, by and large, usually decide to be baptized, and go on to spend their lives the way they began. TLC, like most TV, likes to portray any religion as undesirable, and so, presents us with this garbage.Skip this if you thought you'd be presented with the truth.
