Here's the thing about Jeremy, his health was going sharply downhill towards the end of this series, and (in an actorly way) the role was part of his illness. However, he is such a great actor that even while he was literally dying, he was able to give incredible performances. His Holmes is touched with brilliance, impeccable craft, and just a little bit of madness. It is perfect.

Jeremy Brett is Holmes! All others pale in his wake and believe me I do like the others; Basil Rathbone, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jonny Lee Miller are all wonderful. But Jeremy Brett's performance; his movement, hand gestures, body language, voice, laugh, even the way he sits, fantastic! He is moody , brilliant, charming, sometimes rude, dismissive of everyone elses opinions, just the way Holmes should be. It is just a real shame that his illness overcame him forcing his performance in later series into a downward spiral. Really sad, Ah well! For any Sherlock Holmes fan this is a must... Read the books and compare.

I love this series. Jeremy Brett's acting is superb! Not a fan of the new Elementary so I had to search for these.

I agree completely with Zenspider, and I find it interesting that, while the writers of Sherlock went back to the original material for their scripts, Cumberbatch has said that his physicality and intensity was mostly influenced by his exposure to Brett's performance. I saw this in the very first episode before I read that, and I loved that he incorporated that into his interpretation.
