In reading Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, the books discourage you from reading them, telling you that there are far better things to do with your time that read such an unhappy tale. I was hoping that the movie adaptation of the first three books was able to capture this guilty feeling of voyeurism, and it did, marvelously. Jude Law makes for a fabulous narator, giving the film a good punchy timing. Some adaptations are made to the storyline of the books, but are done well enough that they are forgivable. The first and third books are more of a focus in the film. Although the second books storyline is covered, a lot of the details are skipped. The stand out performances are those of the children and the incredible ensemble cast that backs them up. Jim Carrey's performance is good, but much like many of his previous works. The movie only had the first three books, which is upsetting considered the fact that there are THIRTEEN in the series. The movie was wonderful!I highly recommend that you watch the movie, read the books, or like I did, both.

such a great film ! still worth a watch 10 years later. would have expected at least one sequel, but kind of glad there wasn't one as it probably would have taken away from this, the original.

This movie was hilarious and its a good family film too! I'm sure everyone agrees that Jim Carrey gave the best performance in this! I love how dark this movie is and it has some creepy visuals and sounds to it:) 6.8/10 I also like Meryl Streep's little performance...its kinda like Dark Shadows but so much better!!!

I forgot about this one for some time. It's a good movie, sad undertones, and it has that feel good kind of touch to it as well. Kind of a twisted movie for the intended demographic, but with a family friendly feel. If that makes sense to you, I can tell you what I think of others like this. lol You feel a little at a loss in the very end, but a great case, amazing graphics, and an interesting story. All in all, 7/10. If it were worth less, I wouldn't have watched it again. Enjoy!

How sad is it that this kind of fantastic movie is no longer made? From beginning to end this is an escape for your mind and a treat for your senses. Brilliant. 5/5

I had read this entire series of books in early 2000's. The movie was very well done, but like the previous comment stated it is never good when they cram an entire series into one film. I had hoped when I found out this was coming out that they would have been made into a few films breaking them up. Never the less the characters were very well portrayed, the acting for what it is worth was fabulous; excellent cast. Very visually stimulating;takes your mind on a nice little journey. If you have never read the series this is a fantastic film, and a wonderful family movie. Enjoy! =] 5/5

This movie popped in my head as a memory recently when I watched it as a kid. Such an amazing movie. Forgot how dark this film really was but I do love the ending. A movie that should be seen no matter what genre you are into.

Succeeds as both a family film and a great dark comedy. Great performances by Carrey and Browning 9/10
